I have a Canon rig at the moment but am really ready to get rid of it all.

I think the sony a7r2 looks to be a good bit of gear, the problems I had when I tried it was I hated the ergonomics - it was comically small. And the battery life is laughable.

On the plus side, it has some serious IQ and the lens options for it are really fantastic.
Just an FYI---I have an A7R, which is smaller, but it lives with the vertical grip on it unless I need it really small. You might like the ergonomics a whole lot better with the grip----you should try it (although I personally like the look and feel of the A7R better than the A7RII...). And of course the battery life is doubled....

Well thats why I am not keen on the K1, as I just want a smaller rig. I have to ask why do I need a 645Z Junior when I have a 645Z. Its not like it will be a small as an A7rII or Fuji Xpro2.

Plus, I want something small for convenient travel shots.

645 to K adapter is out of the question as it has zero functionality on my DA and DFA lenses.
It's sounding like you want an RX1RII....

While I prefer to shoot with the Pentax, a lot of times it's just plain inconvenient to lug around (which is why I bought the Sony).

Hi
Just wondering what other systems you guys use as a compliment to your 645?

I am thinking of getting the new Fuji xPro2 and a 10-24, 16, 35, 50-140 and 100-400. Either that or a Nikon D500 and lenses.

I just can't obviously fulfill all my requirements with 645, and the new K1 I doubt will fulfill what I need.

What's everybody else using right now?

Cheers, Scott

I find this topic on my mind as well. I came to the 645Z from a Canon system which I still have. I like the idea of going all Pentax - if the K1 can serve as a backup to my Z in terms of being able to adapt the 28-45 lens to it and also having similar DR characteristics to the Z. At the moment if I need a focal length I don't have in the Z (for landscape shooting) I have to go to my Canon 5D mk3 which is a fine camera but not a patch on the Z for DR. A 36mp K1 would be ideal. My main problem is I have a Canon 500 F4 and 100-400 which I would be loath to part with. if the new 150-450 has stellar image quality maybe it may do as long as the AF is really good on the K1. Too many choices! I'm really just wondering if I should cut my system back to the 645z+28-45 and the K1+24-70+70-200 and keep my 5D3+500 for wildlife.

I'm quite looking forward to the release of the K1 and am not making any decisions until then!

You are exactly the type of user the new FF is aiming to please. Wait a few more weeks. You will be rewarded beyond your expectations.

We are all waiting new Pentax fullframe. Looking into the new patents for the AF, I think it will exceed Canon 5DIII with better image quality from Sony sensor.

It's still going to be a big camera though, with big lenses. In fact the lenses are bigger than anybody else's on the market. A 2kg 70-200???? An over 2kg 150-450???? If they decide to use the Tamron 15mm zoom as an option, it's 1.1kg too.

That's why I am contemplating looking elsewhere for my second kit. Not saying it's not going to be a brilliant camera the new FF, but I am not sure I need another big system. My view may change when it arrives but I am not holding my breath.

I use d750's alongside the 645z, they are small and fast and the controls surprisingly similar with a little customization. I tend to use 25/35/150 on the Pentax with 14-24/58/85 on the Nikon, not the say the new FF isn't going to be amazing, I'll certainly be looking very closely at it.

I have a few K mount bodies (K-5, K-3, KS-2) and a bunch of lenses. I'm also interested to see the new K-1 as a possible compliment to my 645 system (systems actually since I have a D and an original 645) fitting between what I currently have. Especially since I have lenses and they will hopefully continue with the same battery.

It didn't seem like a very big camera to me when I saw it. Seemed "right-sized"....now, I haven't had it in my hands, but it immediately reminded me of my old Sony A850, which was wonderful in the hands. The new Pentax looks maybe a touch taller, but also slightly narrower side to side...maybe? I look forward to holding one.

I don't shoot the 645Z, but rather the 645n.

I used to shoot only landscape photography with a Canon 6D. Over the past year, I migrated my landscape work to the 645n while picking up some new genres. I now use the 6D for real estate, architecture and as a digital/backup landscape camera. I also have the 7Dii for wildlife shooting. Thus far, things are working out quite well. P

my complementary camera to the Z is the K3II. It is a great match for handhelds, long tele, ultra wide, and operation is similar enough to the 645Z to not learn a whole new camera.

Thanks Mike. Yes I have looked at the K3, but to go long I need to get the 150-450 and it's very heavy for its range, compared to some of the other 100-400 type lenses out there.

Also, I don't really rate the wide angle lenses for Pentax APSC, just my view of course.

I still have my Canon 5DSR which, coupled with the right lenses, can complement the 645Z's somewhat limited lens selection. I use Canon's 11-24 since the 645 system has no such option. I also really enjoy the Zeiss Otus lenses (85 for now, 28 is coming in a few days time... can't wait) which in my opinion gives me even greater detail than any of my 645 lenses can on my 645Z (DA28-45/4.5, DFA55/2.8, DFA90/2.8, Hasselblad110/2, FA300/4). Finally I enjoy Canon's 100-400II for its light weight, acceptable image quality and great hand-held stabilization. Last but not least, I love my 400/2.8II for its reach, astounding sharpness even wide open and delicious bokeh. Granted the 5DSR is not really that compact, however personally I am willing to put up with a little bulk for the incredible IQ the camera offers... At the end of the day it's a question of what kind of IQ you want, if you don't mind a significant decrease in IQ compared to the 645Z, then there are quite a few options out there that are very compact.

Hello Scott,

I am using a K3 with a few lenses (Pentax 16-50, 60-250, Sigma 8-16, 10-20, plus a Pentax 50 f/1.2 manual focus), which has the added bonus of sharing all the same accessories, batteries, etc with the 645z making it much easier and lighter to travel with. As well, this way I share the same file format and basic processing, colours and so on are consistent enough, etc and so far this setup is the best I have ever had as image quality and overall convenience / flexibility and so on. Overall, though no system is perfect, I am very happy with this solution, I think the K3 compliments the 645z very well. Best,

Vieri

Agree totally with the statement, especially the consistant processing and colours etc, although I use a K5 iis with Sigma 17-70 / 100 - 300 / 150 - 500 and a Pentax 10-17 DA and 100mm WA Macro, for a keep in the pocket compact, a Fuji 100S
