I have used my Z at around -20°C for more than 2 hours, with wind, and I was in worse shape than the camera. It still worked without problem (except slow LCD), I couldn't see pictures on the screen anymore because it was covered with ice, but that's all.

Drat. I thought this thread was about freezing motion. This a whole different kind of freeze.

I guess it depends on the amount of moisture in the air. I used my K-3 all day long for a week out in the cold hanging around my neck. From -20 to -25 degrees C. The biggest problem was taking it into the house every evening keeping it from fogging up.

My 645D seems to do fine in -10 to -20 F for a couple of hours. The top LCD starts to fail but the screen and camera work until the battery succumbs to the cold.
I would expect the Z to be at least as good!

I think I may have been unaware that it was just the top LCD. I use the top LCD for tripod work. It hadn't occurred to me to use the back screen and see if I could change shutter and stop there. But I am glad to be reminded about that workflow.

I've shot a 5Dii at -40 C. Quite a lot actually. Not very assuring that the 645z froze up!

The rated temperature range is the temperature range that it is rated to operate properly. Some units will operate over a broader range. Some may have partial loss of unction before complete loss. Going outside the rated temperature range is not an on/off type thing.

I just took my Z to Swden this past winter to shoot the northern lights and it held up to -37 C! The batteries didn't last long but the camera kept working. You could tell it was struggling a little, slow and sluggish, but it kept on going.

I have had the LCD stop working but the camera (645D) continued at -25 F or so for 30 or 40 minutes. When my hands stopped working it was time to quit!
