Need help choosing between a 400mm 645 lens or 400 6x7 f4

I am considering purchasing a long lens for my 645Z, I have the 300 f4 but need something longer for mammal and bird enviromental portraits. I am thinking a 400. I would appreciate your comments and recommendations. Although auto focus would be nice it isn't necessarily a deal breaker.
Thank you

Have you considered the 1.4X converter?

I have considered the converter and will probley have one but, I have modified the duel support system from RRS I used on my old 600 for the
300, it helps a lot and I am planing on using it with the 400, I am not sure adding a converter would be the answer, would only give me more cantlevered weight hanging out past the camera. I wasn't a big fan of either the 1.4 or especially the 2X converter when shooting the Canon 600, it was more of a necessary evil when needed.

The 645 400mm is much less expensive and has AF but is f/5.6 while the 6x7 400mm is MF f/4. So if your priority is AF or price, then itʻs the 645 400mm. If your priority is quality and speed, then itʻs the 6x7. Iʻve seen excellent examples on PF posts of the 1.4TC on a 645Z, so if I were in your shoes and was considering getting one anyway, Iʻd opt for the 1.4TC before going for either 400mm.

I used both versions of the 6x7 400mm at various times with my k mount cameras. That M* lens is a A LOT of weight in a little package without a camera attached. I got mixed results with it. I think I faired better with the first version, black fixed tripod foot, and it was much easier to handle. I've been using the 645 400/5.6 on my D and have some very sharp images when properly supported. Spray and pray shots are ok sometimes. I put the 1.4X on the back of it the other day and I wasn't totally discouraged with the results but I need to try it some more. I'd love try the M* with the D but that probably won't happen. Then again, if I was in a position to get one I'd probably just get a 600/5.6 instead.

Both! I got rid of any and all 300mm lenses for this system and kept the 645 FA 400mm 5.6 and the P67 400mm EDIF 4.0. One is light and slow with acceptable quality and the other is heavy , fast , and OMG quality........

I've been using the 400mm fa for 2 yrs. and it has worked fine in the situations I've encounted at f f.6. it's light weight puts little strain on the lens/ camera connection. as I shoot from a scooter or stool, and never extend a monopod or tripod fully, they work well for me. I have used the 6x7 300 f4 but it's weight requires a lens support. the 400mm 6x7's weigh 2 and 3 times as much 400mm f5.6. unless all shooting is done from a tripod, and the small increase in iq a must, the 6x7's will be a pain in the butt.
