Originally posted by itshimitis I don't generally get any issues travelling with my 645Z and the Sony plus lenses. In fact I often travel to Asia and also from time to time to US and to Australia/NZ and haven't had issues. Part of the reason will be that I'm often in business class, but even in economy/coach I had no issues on Qantas or Jetstar. What I tend to do is to have at least one of the cameras on a sling strap and wear it. This then means it's not luggage. It did result in a question from Customs in NZ on one occasion. I have never ever been challenged on any airline no matter what class I'm travelling in - even on Swiss who only allow 7kg in economy. I will sometimes take a lens out of my case and put it in a large coat pocket if I am made to weigh a cabin bag. If you have the 28 - 45 in a coat pocket your cot will become very heavy, but they never ask to weight the coat
This is what sort of floors me about the airlines.
I understand individual bag weight limits: imagine being the person who has to load bags! But the bag limit makes little sense to me---it should be less weight per bag, even if it means more, smaller bags. But total weight per customer? This would only make sense if the customer is also weighed! That's how I'd do it if I ran an airline---everyone step on the scale with all your kit and be assessed accordingly. Smaller bags that could be binned and loaded into the holds with equipment.
As for the overheads, I understand the size and weight and number restrictions: there is limited space, and none of us want some heavy bag hurtling out of an overhead bin onto our heads. It could break your neck.
OTOH, I have seen so many people routinely and cavalierly break the rules it's ridiculous, and the airlines' enforcements are so variable and quixotic that none of it makes any sense. There ought to be some rules governing special, expensive equipment as well---cameras, computers, sporting equipment, & etc.
As for swapping out to Fuji or Hassy? No thanks. The Fuji does look decent and the Hassy "pretty" although it is not my preferred implementation of mirrorless, saw them under glass at PhotoExpo, but the whole thing with either line would be so expensive that I'd never be able to do it. I've now got a Z, a K1, flashes, 11 medium format lenses (I had several from film days) and 3 35mm lenses, accessories including the 645 to K mt adapter, and all of it I was able to get for less than the Fuji and maybe 1 or 2 of the new lenses (although once an adapter comes out then the used market could come into play, advantage: Fuji), and happily now am all in one well integrated system of 2 formats. I'll gladly have that instead of some size/weight savings.
