New 645 lenses

Just a random question:
Does anybody know if Pentax/Ricoh ever really intends to release new and/or updated lenses for the 645z?
I would be first in line for an updated for digital 80-160 zoom with image stabilization
I mean: Just take my money now

Jatrax Johnʻs right; Iʻm #2. But I have a few of comments/questions for Tom:

1) Since when has Pentax introduced image stabilization in their lenses? If anything, theyʻll release a 645ZII with IBIS before they start a whole series of 645 lenses with VR/IS.

2) How do your 645 FA lenses compare to your DFA in terms of function and IQ?

3) Have you rented or shot with the currently available SMC 645 FA 80-160mm? Specific concerns?
LensRentals.com - Rent a Pentax SMC FA 645 80-160mm f/4.5

I see that your (OP) profile you have an excellent arsenal of 645 lenses. I would not wait for the cows to come home for that 80-160mm update.

Don't the HD Pentax-D FA 645 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR Macro and the HD Pentax-DA 645 28-45mm F4.5 ED AW SR have built-in Shake Reduction?

Yes, indeed they do. Thanks for the correction. Iʻve never quite understood why youʻd really need lens SR on a 28-45mm or even a 90mm on MF considering the mirror slap alone is begging for faster shutter speeds.

Pentax is in a bit of a pickle right now tending to three different sensor formats, and chose to dial down their medium format efforts to cope with full-frame demand.

At this point in time we really can't do much but put together wish-lists and speculate on what they're going to do, but I really do wish they'd hurry up, the 645 system is capable of so much and is being stymied by a lack of world-class lenses to get it to really kick ass.

25mm discontinued? Fine, but make something better like a tilt/shift next time, or go slightly wider not to draw comparisons to the 28-45.
No 100 or 110mm f2 lens. There really needs to be a fast, but not too long portrait lens.
No modernized zooms. The 45-80 and 80-160 are nice, but at f/4.5 they're way too slow to use effectively without stabilization and could be sharper. They ought to extend the focal range of the telephoto to at least 200mmbas well, perhaps make a 45-100mm and 100-200mm zoom? Seems like a much more useful range combination to me.
And of course there is nothing with leaf shutters, maybe that's just a limitation of the camera itself and it would take a new redesign to implement, but going forward it would be nice if they had at least a couple of lenses with them for those people who do upgrade.

My question is how many medium format users actually use zoom lenses? Personally my 645Z stays on a tripod or studio stand 100% of the time. If I had a wish list for lenses it would be a more modern 75mm lens with a closer minimum focus, and a more modern 120mm macro lens. The current 120mm macro lens is pretty good, but I think it could really use an update.

I think there are plenty of people who use zoom lenses on their z. It would be nice if they updated the lenses. Id be inclined to get a zoom if they updated the 45-85 or 80-160 with weather sealing, and offered it for the same price as the new fuji lenses.

Firstly, the new DFA lenses blow the older FA versions away. The 90mm and the 28-45 are first class lenses.

Secondly, I've shot with the FA80-160 and have one. It's nice, but offers a flat image sometimes lacking bite and gets soft towards the long end.

A lot! Every landscape shooter dreams of a pair of normal and short tele zooms that have WR and OS, plus are super sharp. Who wants to really carry a bag full of primes when out in the field and who wants to constantly change lenses in high winds or rain? Not me.

I use zooms on my Z constantly. I own a ton of 645 and 67 lenses from all eras of Pentax glass, primes and zooms alike, and enjoy many things about all of them. But my go-to kit is my FA zoom trio including the 45-85mm, the 80-160mm and the 150-300mm.

If Pentax updated these lenses to stabilized, weather-sealed versions with the optical performance of the 90mm Macro (which I don't own, because I don't use that focal length heavily enough to currently justify that level of expense for a single focal length) or new 28-45mm (which I do own), I would get them all...

I see your point but it doesn't help the rest of us that would love to complete our kits with first class optics.

I wish they would give us a timeline of sorts. Fujis 23mm and 110mm are top shelf glass and they are stealing Pentax customers which makes it even harder for Pentax to find the funds to build new lenses.

Everybody praises the second hand market, but it does nothing for Pentax's bottom line.

I'm not sure that I agree. I believe that Pentax have moved a lot of D's and Z's on the basis of good quality legacy lenses being available in the in the used marketplace.

Sure, you can say that. But we are talking about new lenses being released here, not bodies.

You could say they are busy working on FF, but even 2 of the 3 lenses released for the K1 were manufactured by Tamron.

So where is the new products........

i'll concede your point, but paying close to 20k for 4 new lenses might be tight for many of the D and Z owners. for many of us our cameras are not money makers, it's all out of pocket expenses.
