Pentax/Ricoh and the 645

The word from the Pentax stand at the Photography Show in Birmingham , England this week, is that Pentax "is committed to the 645 range"....that's from the 645 specialist on the stand....claims they have sufficient commercial sales to justify the lens development plan for "2018 or later" (as it is shown on the printout on the stand - 'mid-range zoom' and 'tele-zoom' are on the 645 lens development plan - 45-85 and 80-160 revamps??...my thoughts).....would not be drawn on a Z successor, but commented that sensor size would be the determining factor in any new generation product, which seems to suggest another CMOS sensor of the current size....?

....or that they won't be developing any more crop lenses if the sensor size is likely to increase

I would be inclined to think that they’ve not even started on the new lenses at all and there are currently no resources being applied to the 645 system at this point.

They will be waiting to see what sensors come out and how much they will cost before they make a decision on the new lenses and camera.

Be great if they would say something on the matter because it sounds as though people are starting to get restless. Its been 4 years for the body, and except for the dfa 35 (if you can really count it as an update) there really hasnt been much in the way of lens updates. So about 4 years and nothing. If only they could at least release something this year, at least a dfa 45-85 f4.0 that is weathersealed. I know it wont happen, but one can dream...

It will be interesting to see which route they will take though. Go for the larger sensor or smaller sensor. If they went with the 100mp sensor that would come out, would the current lens line up be sufficient in resolving that much detail on that newer sensor?

A reading of Ken Rockwell's effusive review of the new Sony A7 III (if I recall the numbering correctly) may be worthwhile. The article at his website indicates the direction that Sony is going with their sensors and camera interfaces. Ken suggests this camera is all one needs, so a larger 645 format version should get us to more than one needs. What more could one want?

If full frame was so great it would have a sensor that would come in a 4:3 aspect ratio without any form of cropping. so to answer your question only a 4:3 aspect ratio...

I anticipated that "larger 645 format" would imply 4:3 aspect ratio. Perhaps my "What more could one want?" failed to unambiguously point to the "larger 645 format version" rather than the Sony version.
