Filter system for the 67

As I habitually refresh the tracking page on the package containing my new-to-me Pentax 67, I was thinking it would be nice to get a filter system, mostly for various B&W type filters. It would be nice to get a system that I could attach to any lens like the Wine Country system. I looked at the lenses listed here and under 300mm they all seem to be 67mm, 77mm, or 82mm, except the lens that I am getting with my body—the 55/3.5—which is 100mm. Finding a filter system that supports 67/77/82 is easy, but do any support 100mm? Am I stuck with gel filters and gaffers tape, or finding old, used, overpriced Pentax 100mm filters on eBay?

Might be better off selling the 55 3.5 and getting one of the newer versions which have 77mm threads or the 45 which has 82mm threads. I chose the latter option and am happy since it can share filters with the 24-70.

I may do that, I just thought I'd see if any system out there might work. Google is useless since many of the filter systems use 100mm square filters so the search term "100mm" (for the lens threads) doesn't actually limit anything. If I can find a system that can work for not too much more, then I'll keep the 55. I did find a $55 step up ring from 100mm to 105mm, so that may be a possibility if the thread is the same (I'm not exactly sure how the thread/bayonet works and is the thread size is standard.)

Pentax made a 100mm gel filter holder:

Interesting. While poking around on this question, I came across the 67 and the 82 gelatin holders, but never the 100. I’ll have to put a saved search in ebay for that.

Gelatin filter holders may sound the sexy and convenient way to go, but the filters themselves, being hard to find and disastrously fragile in humid or wet conditions (and they do require care in handling), are really a waste of money when multiples are added up. It sounds like you have got a Takumar 55mm with a filter size of 100mm (?). A much better idea would be to update our lens to the newer SMC Pentax 67 55mm with a 77mm thread; many of the most popular SMC Pentax 67-variant lenses have just three filter threads: 67, 77 and 82mm, and these sizes are also interchangeable with a few 35mm systems, in my case, Canon's L-series lenses. Convenient for both worlds!

G-filter holders were on Photrio recently offered for sale by a Japan-based dealer well-known to regulars on that forum.

I’m curious whether thread pitch on all these different filter sizes is consistent. I think I have something figured out, but I have to buy the bits one by one, so if there are fit issues, I’ll have an easier time returning the item.

I mentioned that B&H has a 100-105 step up ring made by Heliopan. Heliopan doesn’t seem to list the item anymore, so it may be old stock. From my searching, the Cokin X-Pro system used to offer a 105 adapter for their system, but it’s discontinued. There is a Chinese seller on eBay that makes one as well as a clone of the X-Pro filter holder. If the bits fit together, I can get the holder mounted to the 55 lens for ~$120 if using the the Chinese parts, or for ~$150 if I but the genuine Cokin filter holder. Then I can start off with their B&W kit for $140 for four filters. Not cheap, but pretty much in line with the cost of any filter system. Additional adapter rings for 82/77/67 from the Chinese seller are $30 each. So I’ve ordered the 100-105 from B&H as a starting point, to see if it fits the 55 lens.

I have B+W, Heliopan, Hoya, Kenko Zeta (made by Hoya Tokina) Nikon, Canon and Pentax filters and all fit any lens on either my 67 or 35mm (Canon) systems.
Occasional problems have been described with Cokin (viva la French!) not screwing on correctly or coming off without provocation. I do not use Cokin (and do not drive a horrid Citroen like my neighbours where wheel nuts are turned clockwise to loosen...)

The reason I was wondering is I have come across occasional reference to two different thread pitches on 105 filters. I guess I’ll just have to find out...

A little more research and it seems the Lee system has a 105 adapter ring as well. On the negative side, it is $125 for just the ring (100mm-105mm, 105mm ring, filter holder is about $230 before I get any filters so start up is a little more expensive. ) On the positive side the Lee is for 100mm filters instead of 130mm filters, and 100mm seem far more common, assuming the holder doesn't vignette on the 55 lens.

No, $230, and it cheaper than this: Wine Country Camera (Though the wine country setup is very nice).

Also I talked with someone at Lee and they can custom make a 100mm adapter, which would drop the price to $180.
