what long glass for the 645z?

I'm looking at a long telephoto, 400mm or more, that I can get, without paying an arm and a leg. Legacy 645 glass is fine. I'm thinking for wildlife, autofocus would be a plus. Thanks!

There's a 400mm f/5.6 for sale at keh a smidge under 1k (but it depends on what you consider an "arm & a leg" price though): Pentax 400mm F/5.6 SMC FA ED IF Lens For Pentax 645 System {77} at KEH Camera Store

More info on the lens here: SMC Pentax-FA 645 400mm F5.6 ED [IF] Reviews - 645 Telephoto Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

If you look at those 645 lens reviews recommended by disconnekt. you'll see that the MF 600mm f5.6 is rated very high. There are generally multiple copies of that 600mm in excellent condition available on EBAY. Caveat: it is a big heavy lens and will require a sturdy tripod and head to realize its potential.

Also found the 400mm lens on ebay for a smidge under $800 (here: Pentax 400mm F/5.6 SMC FA ED IF Lens For Pentax 645 System {77} 27075042544 | eBay), which also happens to be sold by KEH lol

I ordered the 400mm, hopefully it will work for my needs. Anything bigger is just too darned heavy, LOL. Monster Palomar telescope sized lenses.

The 67 300mm F4 M* IFED with 1.4x or 2x extender + 645 adapter is a good relatively low cost option...though quite heavy, only manual, and focussing critical ....image quality is excellent however....I was surprised how good it is, but rather unwieldy to use for (fast moving) wildlife...probably best on a gimbal-type tripod head anyway at this level of magnification....

I got a mint 400 5.6 from a japan ebay seller for $800. Awesome lens but my tripod is not study enough for long exposures. In good light and shutter speeds above 1/500 the results are amazing. Bokeh is a little vintage looking sometimes especially with specular highlights in the oof. I got the 2x tele extender and after trying it I want to sell it. You are better off just shooting the regular 400mm and then cropping. I might give the 1.4x extender a try as it has better reviews.
