Pentax 645z + Godox HSS

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you have had luck using HSS on a Pentax 645z and the older AD360 from Godox. I am using a Cactus V6II and Godox FT-16 transmitter and HSS works fine when I trigger a Godox AR400. When I try to trigger the AD360, the flash fires over the usual 1/125 but nearly a 1/2 of the screen is shadowed by what assume is the shutter (or maybe the mirror?). I assume it's doable (check out: HSS Pentax 645Z Godox 600 – Mark Kitaoka Photographs and scroll down a bit), but I've tried every possible configuration and always get black band on the shot. Does anyone have experience with this combo? Any tips would help.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like the age of the AD360 is likely to be the issue, as your set up works ok with the AR400, have you checked if there is a firmware update for the AD360, if not either purchase another AR400 or a Cactus RF60x ( with build in receiver )I use a Cactus V6ii trigger / receiver with both a Cactus RF60x and a Mets 64 AF1 ( needs to have a separate receiver ) both with a K1 / K3ii and a 645z on HSS with no problems at speeds of up to 1/4000 sec

You will need to purchase the new X-Pro-P trigger or the Adorama R2 Pro for Pentax Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter for Pentax (XPro-P) for Pentax for it to work properly with the AD360. Cactus no longer supports stacking of triggers.

Hey Darryl! Thanks fo the reply. Are you 100% sure that would work? I got the Cactus exactly for that reason and based on recommendations, but sadly it doesn't seem to do the trick. Odd that stacking it does work on the AR400 though...

Mark is the man on this topic, as you note: Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter for Pentax (XPro-P) – Updated 11-17-18 – Mark Kitaoka Photographs

http://www.markkitaoka.com/tag/pentax-645z-hss/

The Godox XPro (P) works with the Pentax 645Z, as does the Adorama rebrand. It does with mine. I was using the Godox AD200, cannot help with other strobes, but they should if compatible with the remote: http://flashhavoc.com/godox-flash-system-overview/

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I'll just have to order the new xpro and test it. Mark's blog post says it works with stacking the FT-16 on the Cactus, which is why I am confused why mine is not working properly.

I was one of the original beta tester for the Cactus V6II. The Pentax version of the software doesn't support stacking of trigger. The best option is the Godox X-Pro-P trigger with the AD600, AD400, AD360 and AD200 strobes.

645z HSS

I own 645Z, V611, godox AD360 & FT16 All works if you stack Ft 16 on top of V 611. Dont have to purchase anything else to achieve manual HSS, your cactus settings might be wrong as I think I had same problem with first attempt from memory.

PS I dont think you use the pentax setting on the cactus, from memory use the manual option I think? I have to check my own again.

That's good to hear! If you could share your settings, that would be great. I have tried a lot of different combos but still nothing. Thanks a lot!

Hi. Have a look at my post here as it might help you. At the bottom of my post #1 there is a link to a pdf I created. Pentax K1, Godox AD200, Godox XPRO and Cactus V6 II: HSS Setting Instructions - PentaxForums.com

However, I suggest getting an XPRO-P and forget trigger stacking. It's just simpler.

sync mode-power sync, delay off, relay off, group sequence off,ttl passthrough off, camera & Flash set up- camera system pentax(sorry I was wrong),,Flash system-manual flash, custom settings -Off,Radio setup-channel 1,radio Id-0000,Multi master-Off,work range -short, Firmware version 1.1.010( maybe later firmware may have disabled, not sure as I havent upgraded firmware. Last time I tried I could get sync up to 4000th sec although largely reduce range at this speed.

I'm a bit puzzled. I have ad400+xpro-p and 645z. In HSS mode ad400 just can't give me enough power for f11 iso 100 1/4000. What's the point of adding HSS in usual flash even if ad400 can't get enough power?

Usually most photographers want to use HSS in ambient light to shoot at wider apertures without having the 125th sync restriction. F11 requires a hell of a lot of power to illuminate with HSS, You would have to be extremely close. In studio you don't really needs HSS as most flashes will freeze motion even when synced to 125th sec. If your outdoors, shooting action with HSS try a different lens , wider aperture ,lower shutter speed ,distance, ASA to make flash range more effective.

You need to understand how HSS works.

HSS is a high-frequency multiple flash (basically like a permanent light). That means:
1.) 50% and more of the lightning energy is wasted on the curtain. Reminder - The sensor is never completely open above 1 / 125s. Only a narrow slit moves over the sensor. The faster the shutter speed, the smaller the slit. So the curtain itself always moves with the same speed only the slit gets smaller.

2.) In the HSS mode many flashes do not reach their full power.

3.) Witch HSS light, no movements can freeze.

I hope that makes the problem understandable.

Greeting Gerd

I’ve used the 645D and the Godox AD360ii. But I’ve heard it works on the AD360 as well.

On the old AD360 you need to manually turn on HSS, are you doing that? And maybe you need to use a Cells-II trigger, I remeber I needed that when I had the original AD360, the FT16 can’t do HSS.

I can’t test it, since my old AD360 was stolen along with the Cells II Canon trigger, I only used a Canon camera back then since I didn’t had the 645D. But the only way to get HSS was with the Cells-II trigger, I remember that much.

Get the Cells-II for canon, or better yet, get another Cactus V6ii, and forget about stacking.

PS: this was with the original FT-16, don’t know if they release another one. But with the original you couldn’t do HSS, in either Nikon or Canon, you needed the Cells-II. It was well known back then.
