Pentax 67ii 90mm 2.8 versions

Hi,

Im looking for the 90mm (not leaf shutter) for the 67ii. Is there anything I need to be aware of... does it come in different versions?

Cheers
Peter

There are three versions of the 90/2.8:

1) S-M-C Takumar 6X7 LS 90mm f/2.8 1971 (Leaf shutter version)
2) SMC Pentax 6X7 90mm f2/8 1980 (regular version)
3) SMC Pentax 67 90mm f2/8 1989 (regular version)

The latest version is usually recommended, as it will have the latest SMC coatings and any optical advances.

Phil.

No change in the optical design between the 67 and 6x7 versions.

I can speak very highly of the final version of this lens, which I have used successfully on 6x7ii, 645D and 645Z.

The older L/S version is not, in my experience, as good optically. I can't speak for the 6x7 version, as I have never used it... If, we mentioned above, it is optically identical to the final version (including the coatings), then that would make a clean example a great value purchase.

If in doubt, you can't go wrong with the final version.

The 90mm f2.8 lens is my second favourite go-to optic afte rthe 75 f2.8AL. It is very sharp with nice contrast. The modern SMC Pentax 67-designated lens came out about the same time as the 67II camera, with a modern flourish that was followed up by other lenses. The gigantic square clip-on hood gives it a very business like appearance, quite aside from making the lens look considerably bigger than it is! Recommended.

The LS shutter version of the 90mm crossed my path years ago but I didn't bite. It is just about the same design, but of course a more cumbersome beast altogether.

I think the final version of the 90mm came out in 1989, where as the 67ii was 1998...

Optically the L/S is different...

I bought the 90 L/S as I couldn't find the normal version (preferred by the reviews), tested it quickly on my 645D and didn't notice any significant problems. Exposures with the L/S are close to the focal plane shutter despite the age (and history) of the L/S. Having bought it, I'm happier about it, L/S and easier multiple exposures on my P67 (should I need it) - due to the cost of the 105/2.4, this would be my standard lens on a P67 (similar to the angle of view to the FA 43 on film).

90 mm 6X7 normal lens.

I have the latest version of the Pentax 6X7 90 mm f/2.8 lens. I never liked it on the 6X7 II because of its lack of contrast : it has no snap, particularly when compared to the Pentax 75 mm f/2.8 AL. But when used on my 645N, it gave me surprisingly good pictures with flash. I can't explain this discrepancy, it's one of those mysteries of life ... lol! After a while being dissatisfied with it, I bought a new Pentax 105 mm f/2.4 : a world of difference, THIS LENS IS SHARP AND CONTRASTY, just what I always wanted but didn't get with the 90 mm. I took a picture of one of my friends at about a distance of 10 feet with the 105 and I could see clearly all the stitchings on his pair of jeans (crazy sharp) ! The only advantage of the 90 mm is its close focus ability.
