Buying from Japan

As the EU now has a trade deal wth Japan, I wonder if anyone has an opinion on the duty levels, if any, of importing from there.

Would be interested in that too. Though it seems like this is only applicable to companies? Meaning that as a consumer you would still have to pay import duties? This might drive down the price of camera products at retail stores though.

Unless you buy a 645z and lenses, the price difference isn't worth the drawback for buying in Japan.

Japanese-produced and originating equipment will enter the EU duty free in three years - current duty rate 6.7 %, and after the first year of the EU - Japan Free Trade Agreement 5 % ... and then 0 % after three years. Much photo equipment is currently being produced in China, and Chinese photo equipment is not covered by the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement.

See page 90:

http://trade.ec.europa.eu/doclib/docs/2018/april/tradoc_156786.pdf

So, according to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan the tarifs will be lifted from 6.7 % to 0 % in three years.

Not only the companies will enjoy the benefits of the agreement - the consumers too will enjoy the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan!

I don't know how Europe does it, but the USA has a giant book (accessible on-line) listing all of the various duties by item and source country. I've never paid any duty on Japanese second hand optics, but if it were collected, it would be 2.5%, as I recall. I don't think the duty I could have paid on any of my purchases would have been worth the expense for Customs to send me a bill. Just to initiate such a process the data on the bill of lading (called "dispatch note" on the Japan EMS form) would have to be typed or scanned into some billing data base. AI will presumably be able to automate the process someday, possibly making collection worth it, but not at present.

At least in Germany the duty may fall but you still have to pay the import VAT (the same amount as normal VAT) which is 19%. This is regardless of the price (including shipment!) and whether you bought as a private person or not.
