2014 645Z vs. 2019 645Z

Hey all - I have an opportunity to purchase a 645z, store demo that's been sitting in a box for about 4 years. It works fine and the price is great but my question is: Is the 2014-15 model the same as a brand new one? Will there be any thing I'm not getting if I buy the older one? Thanks!

Shouldn't be much difference except perhaps the firmware version and that can be updated.

Might be worth getting them to throw in a new battery, they don't last forever and it may have been sat empty for long periods which wont help its performance.

I just bought a NOS Konica Minolta battery for my K10D. I was concerned it might not be up to snuff because of the age of the battery - it's been out of production for Konica for a number of years. No problems at all - it seems to be performing up to the "as new" specs in the time it takes to fully charge, number of shots etc. My old battery, well used, also a Konica Minolta, takes 3-4 times as long to charge and much less number of shots.

Just buy a spare battery, and make sure you have warranty coverage from Pentax just in case. You won't great it. I love my 645z and rarely use anything else now.

I think there is a subtle difference to the fonts in the LCD. It was something I noticed when using a loan camera a few years ago.

You will notice the difference in dynamic range. Much better for recovering from shadows...

Yes, big time---although the 5DS is going to be close at base iso, although I'll bet close inspection gives the race to the Z on tonality. Check this in not black shadow areas to see it most easily. But with the Z you can go up from there if you feel the need, or radically recover in post.

And also have a boatload of giggly fun buying lenses for next to nothing.....the used market is fab, and don't be put off that these aren't the latest and greatest.

A comment and a suggestion.
1st, similar thing happened to me, ended up with a new 645Z but accessories, battery etc indicated that it had been shelved a long time, probably 2015. No problems at all, no reason to aim for a recent build assuming that they are even still building them (which they are probably not, based on longstanding J camera manufacturing/warehousing habits).

So, I hope you already grabbed it! grin.

2nd, as soon as you get it home, be sure to upgrade the original olde firmware to the latest version. Just FYI, the buffer depth/continuous action shooting with latest firmware is significantly better than the (old) posted reviews, which is presumably firmware rather than circuit board or manufacture. So, especially if you're intending to shoot anything that moves, update the firmware on day 1.....

Congrats on yer new 645Z.
