33-55 Lens Hood Differences

Scanning eBay, I've noticed there are two different hood available with this lens. A full hood, and one with a cutout for a polarizer (or variable ND) filter.

Without:

and with cutout:

Did Pentax revise the lens at some point, or just change the hood?

Thanks,
- Arved

It is the same hood, but in your top picture the cut-out window cover not been unclipped. The window cover is removable.

Those are frequently lost. I’ve lost several.

Sticky tape over the window on day one. Only remove it when you want to use a polariser.

I have twice almost lost the trapdoor on the hood of my 75mm f2.8AL lens. I am considering attaching a lens cap-keeper line to it to put a stop to these near-losses. Many of the environments I shoot in e.g. rainforests, are quite dimly lit and there isn't a good chance at all of finding the trapdoor on the forest floor, much less if it should fall into a creek!

So, I guess I can assume listings that show the hood without the trap door (as my second photo above shows) have lost the trap door, and are thus less valuable than listings like the first photo above, that show a full lens hood. A replacement hood isn't cheap!

The moral to the story is to keep a careful watch over the trapdoor whenever the lens is in use, and even more careful watch where you put it when it is removed. It is not easily dislodged, but those specimens which have had vigorous use will become a little less firm over time.

Chinese manufacturer JJC makes almost exact clones of the hood for the 75AL (and others for Pentax and still more for everything else!) available on eBay. Cheap! Cheap! But not the 'genwine article'!

I noticed the 75AL is trending around $3,600+ in Japan (!) That's two-times-and-a-bit-more what I happily paid for...
