If I needed the detail that these large sensors offer, I would opt for a cheaper alternative-- A 4x5 with fine grain film and drum scanning.

Last summer, I brought both my K1 with a DFA 28-105 and my 645Z with an FA 45-85 mm to Arizona and Southern California. I'm getting older and both of my knees have been replaced so I walk with a lot of difficulty. I used the 645Z only close to my vehicle because of its weight whereas I walked much more easily with the K1. I adjusted my color palette to "Vibrant" on JPEG capture for both cameras. My images look much more "static" with the 645Z and much more "spontaneous" on the K1. I tend to agonize on composing my pictures with the 645Z, seeking perfection, but this tends to cripple the naturalness of the final images. I ended up preferring the K1 images, though technically speaking the 645Z is much superior. The picture of the Grand Canyon above was taken with the 645Z. The picture below was taken with the K1 after a long walk in Petrified Forest Nat'l Park, handheld with a CPL.

I've been trying to clean-up some of my landscapes by cropping them down to a pano aspect ratio of about 4:1 (I've found a lab that produces 40"x10" prints). In this respect, there's not much in it between the 645D and K-1 as far as horizontal resolution goes (the K-1 is about 100px wider due to the 3:2 ratio).

I haven't done any direct comparisons and can't really see the difference between CCD & CMOS. The K-1 is more versatile but I prefer using the D (possibly the familiarity of a larger format from my MF film days?).

I don't know where you read that, but actually Sony is selling a 54x40mm 100MP sensor since 2016 I think, used by Hasselblad and PhaseOne, and they have just released this year a 150MP sensor of the same size used by PhaseOne only so far. So Sony definitely is selling FF medium format for quite some time now. And there are probably not cheap, but it depends too on the quantity you buy.
Perhaps here:

BUT I can think of a few things it needs.1 up the sensor to 75 mp.2 add vertical and horizontal sweep panorama.3 add 5 or 7 image adjustable spread HDR.Finish it off by addressing and correcting every bug discovered since it's introduction. call it the 645Z 2 XL#1 won't happen if Pentax sticks with CMOS. I find it hard enough to lug one K-1 setup up a mountain, I can't imagine trying to lug a MF and a FF setup up a mountain. Great pictures of Colorado, hopefully you will have some great pictures of the aspens in the fall with either of your setups.

When you post the images side by side like that, I'm really reminded of the surprise I felt going from a K20d to the K-5. While the K-5 was more workable in post and generally picked more accurate tone/temps creating less work in the end, I always felt a little bit let down by the images SOOC on my K-5. Thanks for putting up these images!

Nice images. I love CCD output. The D interests me mostly for that reason

The most amazing thing about the 645D to me is how it still fights against modern releases with a vengeance. IQ is not a reason you upgrade the 645D.

My KP has virtually cured me of any longings for a K1, even a 645Z. But the 645D CCD at base ISOs has always piqued my interest.
