Dual format (645D & 6x7) 2/3 lens outfit?

Hi All,

I'm trying to nail down a 2/3 lens outfit suitable for both my 645D & 67 bodies. My current line-ups include the 645 FA33-55, 645 FA45-85, 67 55-100 & 67 200/4 (late). The 33-55 is a given as it's the only wide option for the 645D, the 200/4 is currently my favoured long lens for both (I can't see going longer for the 67 due to bulk & weight of longer lenses). Although I really like the 45-85 on the D, I'm happy with the results the 55-100 delivers (despite the loss of AF etc.) and it is a good fit for the 67.

The question is whether the extra versatility of the 67 90-180/5.6 outweighs the bulk/size difference of the 200/4 and whether the IQ is up there for the D (the reviews suggest it's close to but not as good as the 55-100). I'd lose my wider aperture options (67 90L/S & 67 165/2.8) but the 200/4 usually takes their place.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

Edit: Corrected 67 165mm aperture from 2.5 to 2.8

John.

I have owned the 90-180 since release and like it. I bought it for its f/45 in macro and landscape work. It's sharp enough for publication purposes but is slightly inferior to the 55-100. The gap you have to fill seems to be between 100 and 200mm. If it were me, I would choose the 165LS over the zoom for the following reasons-- 1. the 165 is sharper and has the same design as the 200mm. 2. it's smaller and lighter. 3. It has f/32 so the DOF is still pretty good. Be aware that I own both and am not selling either due to preference. I use them both. The zoom is so cheap now that one could actually do a trial run to test it out.... or do a trial run on the 165 instead. If you are thinking or replacing the 200 with the 90-180, I would not.

Thanks desertscape, I have the 135/4, the 165/2.8 & 200/4 and I had thought the 90-180 would cover these focal lengths. I generally prefer the 200 as I'm looking for more reach but a shorter option would be welcome. I hadn't realised the 165/4 LS was a bit smaller & lighter than the 2.8. As you suggest I may try out the 90-180, as I'm happy with the results from the 165/2.8 I don't think I can justify getting the LS version.

FYI, I had the 105, 135, 150 and 200 and sold all but the 200 when I got the 90-180. I have no regrets about the sale.
