This morning, I figured the weights of :

1) a 645Z body + 67 M* 300 mm f/4 lens + 67 1.4X converter + 67 to 645 adapter = 3,85 Kg (8.5 pounds)

versus

2) a 645Z body + 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 lens = 2,81 Kg (6.2 pounds).

I'd have to already own the 67 lens/converter or it would have to optically outperform the 645 400. Not to mention giving up AF.

Thanks for doing the tests and math,

Evening on the Saint Lawrence, CANADA. Pentax 645Z + 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6.

Tripod-mounted 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 + 645Z, 1/640 sec @ f/11. No flare and excellent sharpness.

Extremely difficult backlit situation. Excellent rendering with the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6, 1/1600 sec @ f/16.

The low tide exposes these brilliant reflective wet shoals.

I'd have a shot of the comet here to give an example of performance doing that....except at 4:00am in the dark, I didn't notice that the aperture ring on the lens had somehow been moved off the green A setting. And I couldn't figure out why I couldn't change the aperture. Argh. Given the tight time window, I gave up. Next time.

Nice shots of the St. Lawrence.

Test with the FA 200 mm f/4 + 1.4X converter, 1600 ISO, 1/500 sec @ f/9.

This combination gives a 280 mm f/5.6 equivalent, easily replacing a 300 mm lens. Imaging quality remains very high with good sharpness, contrast and color saturation.
This combo remains quite light and can be used handheld as is the case here. I will try the FA 400 mm f/5.6 + 1.4X TC combination as soon as I can.

I just ordered a 645Z last night and the 45-85mm. Still thinking between the the 400 or the 80-160mm seems to be some really good deals on both of these lenses.

I get decent results with my 400 A but the FA looks great. The biggest problem for me is shutter speeds below 1/60 and image blur.

The 645 FA 400 mm can be used on a K mount camera (with adapter) but you lose all automation. K1 mounted on the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 @ f/11.
