Magnified lower portion of the previous image of Laporte Bridge. Exquisite sharpness and a "sea of details" to peruse over.

That is a combo I'm looking at for next years photography purchase or maybe the 600mm 5.6 A*.

Great results! You are getting max quality out of the 400.

Sorry, the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 ED is my longest lens for the 645Z. I never had any 67 lenses longer than the M* 300 mm f/4 (although I also have the 67 1.4X converter - maybe I should try this combo with my Pentax 67 to 645 adapter someday ... ).

Regards

P.S. I got my 67 M*300 mm f/4 ready for action, I found my "long-lost" 67 1.4X late gray converter and I located my 67 to 645 adapter. I'll go for a try-out as soon as I can. It will be fun to compare the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 against the resulting 67* 420 mm f/5.6 lens.

I finally cleaned and readied my 67 M* 300 mm f/4, 67 1.4X converter and 67 to 645 adapter. I found a huge and sturdy "Picnic bag" to carry the lens mated to the 645Z. This "beast" must weigh 10 pounds but I expect quite good results when I finally can go to take pictures. God, the focusing ring is so "smooooth" on this M* lens ...

Saint Lawrence River on a summer evening. Pentax 645Z + 67 M* 300 mm f/4 + 67 1.4X.

I took this picture of sailboats on the Saint Lawrence River not far from my home. Tripod-mounted 645Z + 67 M* 300 mm f/4 + 67 1.4X late gray converter, 1/100 sec @ f/11 (M* 300 mm @ f/8). This combo weighs a ton, is hard to mount on the tripod (I feared dropping it to the ground more than once) and focusing is absolutely critical and very difficult to achieve. A world of difference in handling with the lighter 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6. I find results somewhat disappointing with all the efforts I had to put into this project. The 645 FA 400 mm would have done as well if not better.

Restaurant (casse-croûte) with tripod-mounted Pentax 645Z + 67 M* 300 mm f/4 @ f/8.

I turned 180 degrees and noticed this creamery. I removed the 67 1.4X converter with great care and refocused on this nearby scene. Focusing was easier than on the River as the subject was nearer and still. I used an exposure of 1/30 sec and f/8. I think this picture truly shows the imaging quality of the 67 M* 300 mm lens. Exposure was set automatically in Av mode. I cropped the lower part of the image to remove unwanted pictural garbage.

If you think that combination is unwieldy, RIchard, you should try mounting the 645 600mm plus 1.4x converter, or the 6x7 400mm EDIF. One has to be quite certain the quick release has engaged on the tripod before letting go, and it's not easy to approach the tripod at the right angle or to receive the required physical feedback to know for sure that things have engaged properly. Quite a challenge!

I do wonder sometimes if I am mad to do it!

What a disaster dropping our lenses to the ground would be ! From now on, the 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 will be my "go-to" long lens. I also have a 645 1.4X converter that I have yet to try in combination with the FA 400 mm.

Regards

Saint Lawrence River. Pentax 645Z + 67 M* 300 mm f/4 + 67 1.4X converter.

Another slightly cropped picture from tonight's foray near the shore of the Saint Lawrence River. 645Z + tripod-mounted 67 M* 300 mm f/4 + 67 1.4X converter. Focusing is quite difficult to achieve with this combo and fast moving subjects. I will return to this site with the 645 FA 400 mm to make comparison shots. I should have brought it along, damnit.
