So with a bit of luck I think it may just work fine on the FF sensor since I think even the FF sensor is slightly smaller than the film - not sure ...
The non crop MF sensor should be around 53.9 x 40.4 mm (Phase One 65+) compared to the cropped version of 645Z that is 44x 33 mm. Have a look at the image format table here at wikipedia that contains a great number of digital sensor and film formats at the end of the article.

FYI, I will be merging this thread with the other similar one sometime today after I get some chores done, just to give everyone some notice. Reason: they are similar, but contain some tidbits in each that are worth preserving---and would probably be easier found/accessed in the future from a merge.

Thanks!

And congratulations on your moderatorship, unless you view it as penance for a heinous crime in a previous life.

What I wanna know is Pentax also thinking 645X using the physically larger 150 MP Sony IMX411 sensor which is 66.7mm diagonal (54x40mm)?
I think that sooner or later Pentax will make a real 6x4,5 digital camera (almost all lenses are FA or DFA with only 2 DA) but maybe with fewer megapixel to have a lower price.

A non-crop 645 MF sensor should be the same as the 645 film format: 70mm diagonal, 56x42mm. Current sensor size is close, but no banana.

I think it would be plenty close enough for most of us using the system.

I second that. For me it would.

I Wonder if there is a dramatic change in image rendering between "true MF" at 56x42 vs "crop MF" at 54x40mm ? Diagonal change of 2,7mm is so important at that size ?

Hi,

I think the main effect is angle of view. There really wasn't more than that when I moved from APS-H to 135 format Full Frame. Of course, I have no experience with Crop 645 format to 645 Full Frame (or close to it). I can say there is a noticeable difference between the old Kodak 36mm square medium format and the Kodak 44x33mm format in the 645D. But, then, everything changed there. Base silicon changed, the lenses changed (I had the Pro Back on a Contax), format changed, aspect ratio changed, etc, etc.

I'd love to see the Sony 150 MP chip go up against the Sony 100 MP chip in a pair of Pentax bodies.

Could a very talented camera repairman switch out the 51mp sensor for the 100mp?

Thanks,

Perhaps if your definition of "talented" includes the capabilities of an optical engineer, multi-skilled electrical engineer, electrical tech, camera mechanical tech, and watchmaker. And you might need large logic array microelectronics laid out and fab'ed. All in a day's work.

I'd rather see a 645Zii upgrade package with the 150 Mpx, but I don't think it is feasible; and if it were, I suspect the cost would be greater than the present Z body price.

Which raises a question: The 'Z' OVF may be FF, but are the mirror and shutter FF? I would expect that they would have been reduced to the cropped size so that they would be faster.

Hello everyone,
I have a Pentax 645Z camera with less than 1,000 shutter activations. It is a wonderful camera and it compares very well with it's more expensive "brothers".
The only improvement I would like to see is a true electronic shutter. Apparently, this can not be accomplished via a firmware update.
The electronic shutter in the Pentax K-1 is very useful when I am doing macro photography image stacks of up to 400 shutter actuations.
This eliminates all vibrations.

Best,
Mike
