Last Sunday, I ordered a "Mint+" late-model 67 M 200 mm f/4 lens on eBay from Japan. FedEx told me they will deliver it to my address tomorrow (5 day transit). I paid 103,50 $ for it with free delivery. Great bargains on 67 lenses these days, guys !

Regards

P.S. FedEx just left, the 67 200 mm f/4 was delivered 10 minutes ago (4 day transit from Tokyo to Quebec). The lens is like new. The bayonet shows no sign the lens was ever mounted on a camera body!

Nice purchase RICHARD, as soon as it arrives let us see what it is capable of.

I will compare it to the 645 FA 200 mm f/4 in landscape use (645Z tripod-mounted, of course), Mario.

I'll be very interested to see your conclusions, Richard. Having done something similar years ago, I concluded that the 67 lens (final version) is the best of the various options available but that none of them is as good as other lenses in the line-up. Certainly inferior to the 6x7 300mm EDIF lens, for example... But, used with care and stopped down the right amount, it nonetheless does well.

I just received my new "used" 67 200 mm f/4 shipped via FedEx. I will try it side by side with the 645 FA 200 mm f/4 as soon as I can (it's been raining almost incessantly for a week and snow may be on the way from the American Midwest (sigh!)). The 67 is much bigger and heavier than the 645, which is normal given the much larger illuminated field (at least 90 mm in diameter). I liked this lens a lot on my 67II. The bayonet of this new lens shows no sign (you know, brassing) that it was ever mounted on a camera body! The glass is "crystal-clear" but looks a little bluish. I fear that, like the 67 55-100 mm zoom, it may produce colder results than the 645 lens.

Regards

I think I now have the best lens kit for the Pentax 645Z :

1) 67 M 55-100 mm f/4.5

2) 67 M 200 mm f/4

3) 67 M* 300 mm f/4

Richard, will also be interesting to hear your comparison between the 6x7 M* 300mm and the 645 FA* 300mm.

Good day, Theuns,

I will compare the 67 200 mm f/4 to the 645 FA 200 mm but unfortunately, I never acquired a 645 FA* 300 mm f/4. I have owned the 67 M* 300 mm f/4 for over 10 years now (I used it with great success on my Pentax 67II film camera) and I am pretty certain it blows away any 645 300 mm lens offerings. It is blazingly sharp, only problems are its size and weight (I'm beginning to have arthritis in my hands). I always dreamed of getting a 67 M* 400 mm f/4 but now I have a very decent 645 FA 400 mm f/5.6 and I almost prefer not to know what the 67 400 mm telephoto could have done compared to the 645 lens ... lol !

Regards

Nice pickup, it's a great lens though I've only used it on 6x7 cameras. One tip regarding the optional lens hood:

The 67 200/4 uses a metal screw-in MH-RA77 hood. You only need to use the hood if you are also using a filter. You can skip using the hood if no filter is attached, as the front lens element is recessed enough.

Enjoy!

Phil.

First image with new 67 M 200 mm f/4 on the 645Z. 30 sec of sunlight in the whole day

I mounted my newly-acquired 67 M 200 mm f/4 on the 645Z and as I was toying with the camera in the house, sunshine appeared for about 30 seconds, long enough for me to take this picture handheld. ISO 200, 1/640 sec @ f/5.6. The viewfinder image is bright and very uniform, focusing is butter smooth and the image pops on the groundglass.

Life is good. Another miraculous sun appearance today.

The sun disappeared and reappeared 15 minutes later for another 30 seconds. This time I shot at 1/320 sec and f/8, probably the 67 M 200 mm f/4's optimum aperture.

The colors are very saturated in both photos, a little more in the first one.

I would like to know if the profiles you use have changed them (saturation, contrast etc.), or are the default ones.

However the sharpness and generally the overall quality is very good, I think that by getting to know it you will benefit a lot. All the best

Ciao, Mario

Hello Mario,

Usually I slightly lighten the images and add a little sharpening. I have set the color palette of the 645Z to "VIBRANT" to get punchy colors. This produces bright pictures. I delete all out-of-focus or improperly focused images and I don't play much with the colors (I have the same color vision defect Vincent van Gogh had, that's why I love so much BLUE and YELLOW. If you want the best camouflage ever with my kind of vision, simply put an ORANGE object in a field of GREEN, it then totally disappears).

Regards

Pentax 67 M 200 mm f/4 VS 645 FA 200 mm f/4 : it's a tie.

I mounted the 67 M 200 mm lens and took the upper picture, then switched for the 645 FA 200 mm and took the lower picture : same exposure of 1/60 sec @ f/5.6 and critical focus, on tripod.

CONCLUSION : Both look pretty much the same but the 67 shows a little more definition in the leaves. The 67 seems a little longer than the 645 though, like if it was a 210 mm lens. Out-of-focus background looks smoother with the 67 lens.
