If you have seen the video's and read the articles about K-New and about their commitment it might be a long wait. At the moment Ricoh is dedicated to a new flagship K and developing FF lenses and updating the existing DA collection to HD and better SDM system. They are extending the choice for those who own an FF already, but have little choice in modern Ricoh/Pentax glass. I sooner expect an FF-new than a medium format. Furthermore they promised to offer more affordable lenses than the * editions they released in the last few years.This is what I read between the translated lines of the video interviews. To make it clear, this is my interpreatation.

I would expect a new Pentax MF camera perhaps three years (or more) from now....

Unless they decide to translate K-new AF system first to 645 Z II versus K-1 III, which sounds pretty unlikely.

And since the OP said "medium format in 2021" Pentax Rumors will be posting by day end that they heard a rumor of an upcoming Fuji killer MF in 2021. <sigh>

When I worked at a fairly large consumer electronics outfit, they had an official leak and rumor department. Unofficially, of course.

What was grand, is all the leaked photos had the same background and such. The official unofficial photo studio.

Same as last time this question came up in regards to 2020. The same answer applies to 2021, 2022, and all future years.

Fuji will release a new product between January and February in 2021

Impact on Pentax will be the same as last time this happened. If Fuji does so, it might be a good time to buy their product.

I doubt many Pentax 645 shooters are leaving their existing systems for Fuji's offerings, but I wonder if there are many new MF shooters who are looking at what Pentax offers when there's a seemingly resurgent Hasselblad and Fuji (not sure who else plays in this space these days) offering what they do. Pentax doesn't lose market share directly but over time the user base may shrink and in effect be like losing users as folks retire out of using their equipment and buying new glass.


This isn't an area I think about much at all and have never used so grains of salt with this musing.

I think the 645z is (after 6 years on the market!) still at the forefront. Apart from size and weight, but I doubt whether Pentax goes to Mirrorless in the medium format ...
