Surprised by the view thru the 645Z viewfinder!

Always thought the 645Z viewfinder showed a much larger horizontal view than the K-1. Tonight I removed both lenses and put the K-1 up to the left eye while looking thru the 645Z with the right. I mentally superimposed the two rectangles together like a 3D photo. Surprisingly, the two camera viewfinders had the same horizontal coverage. The 645 did have more at the top and bottom, due to the different format. I would have sworn the Z was bigger all around.

Thanks,
barondla

Makes sense. According to the specs posted over at DPR, the K-1's OVF has a magnification of .7x, while the 645Z is .77x (35mm equiv).

Will the new OVF design being debuted in the upcoming K-3 III be ported to the K-1 and 645Z successors? One would think so...

The math below seems to make sense to me... YMMV.

Ovf magnification applied to the width of each sensor to give a rough idea of perceived width makes the two seem quite similar in how the viewfinder presents the images. Even without taking ovf into account the width is only at most about a 20% delta. When you add back the ovf factor - the fact that one is viewed with a 10% higher magnification - suggests that the optical view is fairly similar in width.

Pretend we had a scene 100 units wide on the 645z sensor and 80 wide on the k1 sensor. Viewed on the 645z it would appear as 130 units wide (100/.77x), the k1 would show a scene 114 units wide (80/.7x). The difference in view dropped to about 12% of the larger view due to ovf magnification differences ((130-114)/130).

Yes, the math makes sense. Until I compared the viewfinders and saw the math, I'd swear the 645 was much wider. Guess the extra height threw me off that much. I also find the 645 easier to look thru. Perhaps the wild 645 viewfinder tunnel has some affect on that.

Thanks,
barondla

Agreed - I prefer the view through the 645Z, and I can't figure out why. I think you're on to something here.

The less rectangular aspect ratio still makes for more viewing area.

I also prefer the 645Z viewfinder, but I'm still happy to slum it with the K-1 when necessary
