Sony has discontinued the 50MP MF sensor

Products?Image Sensor?Consumer Camera?products?Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group

Will Ricoh update the 645z with a 100MP sensor or discontinue the MF line?

How many 645z sensors do they have left?

Feels like a real do-or-die time for the Pentax 645, more than it did before this news.

Really wondering what Ricoh will do here.

I've just received a marketing email from Ricoh EU saying 645z is out of stock. They do have one or more with a 55mm as a bundle, but that's it. Coincidence?

Ricoh would have got this information long ago and have had the chance to make a last time buy, that can last them for years if they want to.
But Sony may still manufacture this sensor for already existing customers like Ricoh and Fuji. They may just have stopped selling it to new customers.

The possibilities are endless.

This ^ ^ ^...

It should be remembered that sensors are not sold as "off the shelf" product. Perhaps Ricoh will "pull a rabbit out of their hat" with a 645Z100, but who knows.

B&H is showing a significant discount on the 645Z. A closing out special offer?

No recent fall in price here in UK. Yet? The price has dropped £2000 since May of last year, which is big drop, but not unexpected taking its long time in the market.

It has been like that for awhile. Can even get an FA 75mm thrown in for that price. To keep it competitive with the GFX 50s more than anything else, I expect.

The rumor is the Fuji 50s & 50r are going to be discontinued once the GFX100s starts shipping. The reason Fuji is putting the GFX100s right now is due to the end of the 50s & 50r.

The wafer that was used for the 50MP sensor is the same one used for the K-1 sensor so both should be nearing their end of life.

I've read about consumer post-purchase behavior (trying to be re-assured of having made the right purchase decision by looking for elements that confirm the good choice), but I'd be interested in learning about the psychology behind looking for cues of failure of a previously owned brand. Just curious, if someone could explain to me. Personally, if (or when) I'd use another brand of camera, it would have zero impact on what I think of Pentax and Pentax cameras.

Simple answer; Nobody here on PF have any clue of what Ricoh and Sony are doing regarding sensor for Pentax.

Another version of your sentence might be restated as "Nobody here on PF have any clue of what Ricoh are doing regarding Pentax."

I guess all we can do is wait and see... We have all put forward our preferences/wishes on other recent threads that, one might hope, are picked up by Pentax and given due consideration. Some definitive communication from them soon would be nice though, so that we know what's coming!
