Thanks for finding that sensor. However, don't try this on your Z. Boring the hole will also ravage all the 'Z's electronics.

Super find. Forget the Z. All we need is a 645 lens mount on this baby. Pure Digital (trade mark) no screen to chimp with. Color and monochrome bodies available. Leicaphiles are giddy with antici....pation

I would have sold my car and all the cameras I own to buy a 6x7 digital! But we know that is just a dream. As far as size of camera goes, I mostly agree with you. I like a hefty camera for studio and landscapes with close by access to my car trunk. For backpacking landscaping, I would want to carry the lightest kit possible. I am afraid that the upcoming $3-3.5K Fuji is going to deliver all those requirements. If Pentax releases a medium format follow up to 645Z, I think it would be the gutsiest move in all of photographic equipment history.

I am loosely following the features of the K3-iii because if the past is any indication, Pentax apparently has the tendency to copy features/systems from one camera to another new models. I believe the K3 was the fore-runner for the 645z features. I thought the KP would be a tell-tale of what to expect next, but perhaps the K3-iii is a better indication. Some new features are really interesting, except I hope they stick to the flip screen on the 645z new model ( I use that a lot).

There is also a youtube video on the next Pentax versions. I have no idea how authentic the information is, or whether it is pure speculation. Here is a link to the video:

Do I need an upgraded 645z? Not really. I can do what I'm doing comforably with the 645z.
Do I want an upgraded 645z? Ohhh yeah!!! In this case my "wants" far exceed my "needs".

Interesting. Marketing wise can't Imagine them bringing out a camera named DII 645. That would be confusing as heck. Makes people think ccd, no live view, no video, and no flippy screen.

Thanks,

Kicking the red herring out of the path of progress, one might assume that "ZII" would be more likely.

What Ricoh really needs to do to stay relevant is drop the mini-MF sensor size and go back to actual 645. They obviously have the lenses to put on a camera with that sensor size. This would immediately make the whole system more appealing than Fujifilm GFX, which would be stuck with a mini-MF 44x33mm sensor.

And that would put it into the price range of Phase One and Hasselblad at $25,000-$40,000

Would it? We heard similar stories when the 645D was introduced and Pentax came in with a much more advanced camera. It was far less expensive than Hassy and Phase.

Thanks,

And it had a crop sensor not a full 645.

Hi,

I think that Pentax could produce a 645 with the 150 MP Sony sensor for sale in the $10-15k range.

That's right. The same crop sensor as the entry level Hasselblad and Mamiya/Phase One cameras of that era. Still cheaper.

Honestly, I would be very surprised. I would imagine it rather in the [15~20]k range, and that would still be quite a performance.

Hi,

The 150 MP sensor is only 20% more than the 100 MP sensor. And Fuji is using the 100 and selling for $6k.

It's not just the cost of the larger sensor. It's the cost of developing everything else around it. And that cost needs to be offset by likely much lower sales numbers, meaning much higher per unit price.

Plus how many of the modern Pentax lenses will support FF 645? Would buyers be willing just to use older MF lenses?
