I even think it is't really fair that those images can join the competition. Everybody with access to a huge industrial telescope can post those images. For that reason it even aren't really special pictures.

I really like you're picture and the work it costed to produce it.

Fun shot. Guess it's acceptable to look up a "model's" nostrils in this case. Good luck, and congrats.

You'd be amazed what you can do with modest equipment. I'm guessing a bit, but I suspect a lot of these are taken with 8-10-12-16 inch telescopes on tracking mounts, along with cooled CCD cameras. It ain't cheap, but $20k - $50k or so (or a lot of DIY) gets you the ability to get shots like the ones of the deep space objects.

And, some dedication - Notice this comment on the last image: "With 14 hours of exposure, faint details and structures deep within the nebula began to emerge."

That takes real effort and skill, not necessarily overly-fancy equipment.

Agreed. And time spent with software to merge and stack images. I knew folks that were heavy into this type of imagery. From my perspective I think landscape/Astro is very different than deep space/Astro. I personally would prefer that each was in a different category- which they may be - but someone has to win best in show and at that level they should compete with each other.

Even if you don't win, to be shortlisted out of more than 4500 entries is an extraordinary accomplishment! We share in your joy!

Thank you so much, everyone, for your warm-hearted and encouraging messages. It really does mean so much to me and reveals what's so special about this place - we're genuinely a community and a band of medium format siblings :-)
