Unless your nickname it "Rock", one cannot shoot a 300MM lens at 1/60 and not get some "shake" !

How much money do you want to put on that statement?

I see some good fortune coming my way....

My French family name (Laroche) precisely means "The Rock" ... lol ! I had to learn 1/60 is difficult to handhold but I'll try my gun shooting techniques later when my strength has come back !!

Regards

There is a learning curve to any new activity. I hope to master this telephoto lens soon.

Thank you, gentlemen

You nailed it with the gun shooting technique analogy, bracing, breathing and squeezing the trigger. I use a finger roll on the shutter button.

Doesn't always work, but works often enough for me.

Handheld FA* 300 mm f/4 shot at 1/200 sec and f/11 using "gun-shooting" technique.

I braced myself against my patio door frame, took a deep breath, released part of the air, triggered the shutter then finished exhaling.
Handholding such a heavy and high magnifying lens requires some discipline. Now I know I can get away with 1/200 sec.

There you go.... You are recovering quickly, keep going like this and you'll have to buy one more lens soon.

Tests of the FA* 300 mm f/4 @ f/6.3, f/11 and f/22 on tripod : all are SHARP !!!

645Z + 645 FA* 300 mm f/4 on Manfrotto 028 tripod, extremely low discharge Batiscan River. Images taken 1) 1/400 sec @ f/6.3 2) 1/125 sec @ f/11 3) 1/30 sec @ f/22. All are sharp but f/11 seems optimum.

Sharp, even wide-open. 645 FA* 300 mm f/4 ED IF.

Picture taken on tripod, 1/3200 sec @ f/4, ISO 400, on a 645Z. Picture is quite sharp, although the edges seem a little weak, and there is visible separation between the dark rocks in the "foreground" and the far-away background.

The 645 FA* 300 mm f/4 pulls in myriads of details.

Every Quebec town has a Catholic Church with tons of architectural details in their steeples. This is a handheld close-up of the Saint Raymond steeple taken with the FA* 300 mm f/4 ED IF, 1/800 sec @ f/7.1.

VERY SHARP !

I posted a review about the 645 FA* 300 mm f/4 ED IF lens. It's unfinished as such but I will add comments as I learn to exploit its full potential.

645 FA* 300 mm f/4 ED IF, tests between f/5.6 and f/32, 400 ISO, 645Z on tripod.

FA* 300 mm f/4 ED IF @ f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22 and f/32. Apertures are all highly usable, with the best range being between f/8 and f/22.

An aperture of f/16 seems to be the "ULTIMATE" opening.
