Shooting landscapes with the 645Z after using a mirrorless camera feels like using an antique. Landscapes are so much easier to compose on a tripod at different heights if you can see what you're shooting in the rear screen. While possible to do on the 645Z, its much nicer on a modern mirrorless camera..

I never use the rear screen for composing an image - that is like shooting with a cell phone. One of the advantages of the DSLR, and particularly an MF one, is the large optical viewfinder. I bought the K-3III in June, and I have not once used the rear screen for composing images. As an outdoor photographer battery consumption is important to me and using electricity while looking through the viewfinder or composing images would quickly drain my batteries, not to mention straining my eyes. I also use the camera with telephoto lens as binocular substitute - without using power.

2022 Update!

I bought a 645D about two weeks ago and have been using it almost daily as I would be using any other camera.... and I love it...

it is entirely usable as a walk-about camera (with a decent strap) and simply takes amazing photos....

Can you share what lenses you are using and what bag, if any you are using with it?

of course!

currently using the SMC A 645 55/2.8 and 200/4; in the process of finding/buying an A or FA 120/4 Macro...

and carrying the behemoth in a Domke F-3X (which is just simply an awesome bag)...

I keep getting tempted by the 645D. I assume it has the little focus confirmation hexagon like the smaller cameras? I'd mostly just want to use all my P67 lenses with it (I have about a dozen...)

That sounds like a plan in the making. I think it’s a good one, looking forward to seeing you post some images.

we'll see. Last month I spent $1800 on a K-1ii and kit lens, so I think it will be some time before I can afford another $2k camera! The K-1 will primarily be used to digitize film (thats actually why I bought it), but I did take it on a trip to SE Utah. I'm a sucker for CCD colors though, which is why the D intrigues me (I've also looked at older phase one and sinar digital backs for my LF cameras, but support for those is spotty.)

sorry for the delay - yes, the 645D does give you focus confirmation...

This looks like a nice 645D kit on my local Craigslist for $2650CDN:

The 45 seems close to the 55 you already had - what’s the appeal?

Most reviews malign the 645 45 mm f/2.8 lens (be it an A or FA version). Most reports I saw said the lens had soft corners and was highly prone to flare and ghosts. I have a like-new used copy of the older A 45 mm f/2.8 bought on eBay from Japan and it always gave me edge-to-edge sharp images with excellent contrast on a Pentax 645Z. The angle of view is perfect for landscapes, being equivalent to a 35 mm FL on Full-frame. This lens is sold at bottom prices because of the bad reviews but it is as good as any other Pentax 645 lenses. You sometimes have to make your own opinion and not always believe blindly what you read.

This is a 2X magnification of the image above : very sharp !

Some copies may be "dogs" (like any other lens model) but when you get a good one, it is GOOD. The 45 mm doesn't focus very close but then it is a landscape lens, not a macro. These lenses are not made to be shot "wide-open", it performs best between f/8 and f/16.

Regards
