Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift

Hello 645ers,

Laowa has a new15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift lens that is supposed to work with medium format cameras.
Does anybody here know if it will work with the 645z?

Thanks - Ken Marceau

It is a K-mount, I am not ware that it is available in other Pentax mounts. So minimum an adapter is needed. I thought it is a full frame lens (even though some sites report it as a medium format lens). So there will be vignetting. I would ask at Laowa customer service.

Surely it won‘t work because of the too long register distance (lens flange to sensor) of the Pentax 645. The lens needs shorter.

If Ricoh would produce a mirrorless 645 like the Fujifilm 44x33 there would be a possibility that a fitting adapter would be developed too. I don‘t think this will happen.

It’s availlable for different mounts including Fujifilm MF. The image circle it produces is easily wide enough to cover the 44x33mm sensor.

It is - but the distance from lens mount to sensor makes it unsuitable for the 645 mount.

Shame really. There's also a 20mm lens too.

15mm on a 33X44mm sensor would be an extremely niche superwide lens: 11mm in 35mm terms. in addition the shift facility would be limited on such a large sensor.

The Fuji MF is a mirrorless system, Pentax 645D is an SLR, with a mirror.
Similar sized sensors, but lots more body between lens mount and sensor on the Pentax
You can get adaptors to put Pentax 645 (and 6x7) Lenses on the Fuji MF, but I don't think you can find adaptors to put anything Fuji MF mount on the Pentax, it wouldn't focus to infinity.

I've got a Fuji GFX 50D, and found a Pentax K to Fuji G mount adaptor, and an old Pentax K 18/3.5 that I've put on it, I can get panoramic format out of it, but w/full frame, bad vignetting in the corners, too bad in my mind. I suspect you would get something similar from the Laowa 15mm on a MF sensor. Because the Laowa is designed for movements on APSc or FF35, it may give a bit more even coverage out to the corners on MF, but I doubt much if any room for movements.
Intriguing idea though

Just out of curiousity, now that this thread has made me aware of the existence of these lenses.... What's the difference between the ~$500 USD Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle 1:1 Macro Lens with Shift for Pentax and the ~$1,200 USD "Zero-D" version?

The Zero-D version seems to have a much more bulbous front element. Both seem to have a described 110 degree angle of view. Both are full frame.

Both of these are Blue Ring Versions:

Lower priced lens: 6mm shift for FF. 12 elements in 9 groups with 3 High Refractive elements & 1 Extra-low dispersion element. 14 aperture blades. 77mm filters.

Higher priced lens: 11mm shift for FF. 17 elements in 11 groups, including 2 aspherical elements and 3 extra-low dispersion elements. It suppresses the distortion to nearly Zero level from corner to corner. 5 aperture blades. No filters due to front element protrusion.

Well, there, I seem to have answered my question. Maybe this will be helpful to others? Interesting that both the Blue and Red ring versions of the Zero-D will continue to be sold?

Red ring version seems to add 14 aperture blades to the higher priced lens, "without increasing the price" but not yet listed at Adorama or B&H. The article doesn't seem to mention other differences between blue and red versions aside from aperture blades.

There's also a Venus Laowa 20mm f/4 Zero-D Shift for slightly less than the 15mm Zero-D. 11mm shift on FF. 16 elements in 11 groups with 2 aspherical elements and 3 ED elements. 14 aperture blades. Had a Red Ring from the start, apparently. Will allow 82mm filters.

The 15mm/4 and the 15mm/4.5 are completely different animals. The 15mm/4 is designed with macro photography in mind, and is actually quite good in that range, but otherwise has strong barrel distortion. The 15mm/4.5 is primarily a shift lens for architecture and landscape with almost zero distortion. The 15mm/4.5 is a much higher quality lens.

Both the 15mm/4.5 and the new 20mm shift lens both can be purchased for Fuji GFX mount. They both cover 44x33mm with movements. The don't work on P645 because of the registration distance.
