That ad reminds me how pervasive smoking was, even in advertising...

he is like Pentax's own marlboro man. I have a sneaking suspicion, that is exactly the image Asahi's ad department was going for. whats manlier than a marlboro man, a 6x7 and a ridiculously big lens? I wonder what kind oflightmeter is in his pocket?

really cool ad. by far my favourite.

The "Pentax Man" looks like he's smoking a doobie. Cool ad.

Cool ad. Such carefree days (or so I've heard.)
Wouldn't be doing that with a DSLR these days... you know how bad smoke particles are for the sensor!
Plus, he looks like he's about to drop a bit of ash on the lens. That would be even worse.

Nothing cooler than a man with a 6x7 and 400mm SMC Takumar in hand. I have to agree that ash looks ready to fall! This demonstrated risk and that of course is cool.

Seems like it needs Dennis Hopper sitting there with that 6x7.

The dude's sporting a porn 'stache. Would have looked better with a model reflected in the front element of the lens, in some kind of early 70's bikini.

I used the 400mm F4 on my 6x7 handheld 90% of the time. Here is a photo I took in the 80's with it.

Here is a scan from a magazine in the mid 70's were they mentioned the 6x7 Pentax I used to take the photo.

55mm F3.5 lens

I'm convinced...

Well, I've been thinking about getting a Pentax 67 for those times when I need something more portable or where my 4x5 can't go. This ad has totally convinced me that this is the camera for me. It's like Boogie Nights for cameras. Perhaps I need to grow a mustache as well.....

Thanks!

Except that the SMC is so effective so that not enough light is reflected to create such an image on the front element, and SMC was one of their biggest advantages in the competition so they would not have wanted to create an add with a lens that looked like it had a terrible flare problem even if such a picture of course could have been superimposed artificially.

I've seen this poster in a Flickr collection. Pure class, ya?

Definitely going for the macho angle.
