Seriously, though, the time-of-developing scans I get from 6x7 film ("16b" on a Noritsu scanner, 2048 x 2510 resolution) are generally at least as good as the DIY scans I get from 35mm (on a Nikon Coolscan V).

I don't know if your local lab can deliver good 645 scans at a reasonable price but it's certainly worth trying.

i have access to an Epson V700 for MF, not the best but we'll see.

The supposed detail of a 6 by 4.5cm or 6 by 7cm negative will go to waste, especially if he tries to combine it with the shallow depth of field of an open aperture, as medium format lenses have less acuity than 35mm lenses, in general.
