Scanning, however, will drive you nuts. If your lab offers scanning at time-of-development, get it!
i enjoy scanning though, scanned all of my europe photos last week ago, 400 of them
I see. . . scanning has already driven you nuts!

Seriously, though, the time-of-developing scans I get from 6x7 film ("16b" on a Noritsu scanner, 2048 x 2510 resolution) are generally at least as good as the DIY scans I get from 35mm (on a Nikon Coolscan V).

I don't know if your local lab can deliver good 645 scans at a reasonable price but it's certainly worth trying.

One word : detail...
He rarely prints anything large enough to warrant the 14+ megapixels in his K20D. The supposed detail of a 6 by 4.5cm or 6 by 7cm negative will go to waste, especially if he tries to combine it with the shallow depth of field of an open aperture, as medium format lenses have less acuity than 35mm lenses, in general.

That picture was well worth the lugging around. Great spot to be in at the right time.
