Hello !

Is "Craters of the moon" near Grants, N.M. along Interstate-40, in the "Malpais" region ? We can see lots of volcanic rocks on both sides of the highway there.

Regards

P.S. Sorry, I was confused with the NM after "Craters of the Moon", I thought it meant New Mexico but it signifies "National Monument" (my bad). Now that I've known digital (Pentax 645Z), I wouldn't go back to film anymore.

Post your medium format photos!

No, Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho, on the high road between Idaho Falls and Boise.

It’s not much different than the more recent lava flows from Mount Taylor that created the Malpais. Mount Taylor is one of the four sacred mountains of the Navajo—a special place for them and for me. But the Yellowstone super volcano is an enormous hot spot under the crust that is very active, though it only erupts violently every 600,000 years or so. Craters of the Moon formed from one of its side channels, more recently that when the upper tectonic plate was over that hot spot. I could spend years in that area and not see it all. As it was, I had two days on that trip.

During summer 2019, I had the leisure to pass through Grants, N.M. where you can observe volcanic rock from the Interstate (a region called "el Malpais", meaning "good for nothing country" in Spanish).

Hello Theuns,

How do you like your 67 M 55-100 mm f/4.5 zoom ? Heft, ease of focusing, focal range, sharpness ?

Regards
Richard, I absolutely love the lens. For now it stays on the camera until the 'first love' wears off a bit, then the other beloved lenses can have their turns again :-)

I found the focus easy to get used to, but without the split screen it would have been very difficult or close to impossible with the viewfinder. I found the focus very sensitive, even though the 'stroke' is long and smooth. As you approach infiniti the sensitivity seem to increase.

With the butterflies the manual focus was the only way to go because the background was scattered with distractions for autofocus. My wife tried with her D850 and only got nice shots with the background in focus and blurry butterflies. She could not convince the Nikon autofocus to see the butterflies.

I tried two methods with the manual focus and only one worked, sort of. At first I tried to identify a focus zone and waited for the butterflies to go into the focus zone (like a 'kill-box' approach). That didn't work because the butterflies didn't get the memo. There were four of them tangled in the dance. When two left I decided to change tactics, lest the last two also decide to leave.

For the second method I followed them in the viewfinder best I could and purposely focused behind them then hit the shutter button and pulled the focus forward while shooting. Hence I got one shot in focus and two shots almost in focus.

In a different setting with the background below the action autofocus may just do the trick.

What amazed me most was that I became excited about butterflies. Maybe my testosterone levels are dropping faster than I thought :-)

Thank you, Theuns,

I tried my 67 M 55-100 mm zoom alongside my 645 FA 55-110 mm and I must say both produce very different pictures. The 67 lens seems "colder", more bluish in its rendering, while the 645 zoom is very "warm", maybe a little too much yellowish or reddish. The 67 weighs more than double the 645 (1200 g vs 500 g) and focusing is really hard to attain while the autofocus of the 645 performs very well for what I do. Also the 645 gives me "very sharp" images, beyond what I believed was possible considering the negative reviews everywhere. Maybe I was lucky with the copy I got from Japan. I'll try to keep using both side by side and I will post my findings here on this Forum.

Regards

Definitely as artful an image as any I've seen hanging in any doctor's offices.

I went out to this valley for sunrise this morning. I was the only one around and it was pretty nice despite the too-clear skies.

Thanks and yes, where I live is usually pretty good for maintaining my own space. Although this summer a lot of traditionally quiet places got a lot busier than usual!

I quite like it...
