I was going through some of my pictures over the past couple of years and realized there are a fair number of fast action images. Thought I'll share these with you guys. In the pics I selected only the following lenses were used: P645 600mm A*, P645 150-300mm, P645 300mm FA* and P67 55-100mm. With the 600mm I used a gimbal head on a monopod otherwise the others were all handheld.
Two elephant "teenagers" dealing with their anger issues. Handheld 645z with P645 150-300mm
Family weaver bird entering its nest. These birds are super fast and make a high speed approach to the massive nest, then do a break maneuver as they turn sharply upwards "diving" into the nest, 645z P645 600mm A* on monopod in safari jeep.
Bee eater bird leaving its lookout point. 645z P645 600mm A* on monopod in safari jeep.
Two birds doing a ski-like maneuver after take-off from a tree. 645z P645 600mm A* on monopod
Butterfly on finals for landing to check out the flowers. 645z P645 300mm FA* Handheld.
Two butterflies in a mating dance. 645z P67 55-100mm
Buzzard eating his catch in mid-flight. 645z P645 600mm A* on monopod.
Egret Landing 645z P645 600mm A*
Eagle making a clumsy landing in a tree-top. 645z P645 600mm A*
Taking fast moving action shots with heavy equipment, slow frame-rates and in some instances manual focus is definitely possible. Spray and pray does not work and it does take some effort to time the moment.
