What's the saying again? The more you practice the more luck you have... Or something like that.

That is true, my friend. But this was still a big slice of good luck! It might be that hard work causes good things to happen more often, but for that to occur on literally the only evening I could visit the Canyon was something I'm grateful for :-)

First Milky Way shots of the season. Took both the 645z & K-1. Had nothing but problems with the K-1. Really liking the 645z more and more.645z w/ 25mm

Excellent! Motivating me to try photographing the Milky Way. The Z Is tough to leave at home. It ruins a person. What problems did you encounter with the K-1? I do miss the K-1's ability to read out elapsed time while shooting on bulb. Just ordered a timed wireless release for the 645Z. Looks promising.

Thanks for sharing,

The Fuji gives a countdown when in single shot mode on a timed exposure which can be done at 30, 40, 50s and 1, 2, 4, 8, 15 30 min 60in and upwards. It's very useful.

At the moment I am on a SAGA cruiseship going around the UK for 10 days of its 16 day schedule. We set off from Tilbury around 6pm and bow we have lots of murk and mist.

The screen on the K-1 was very snowy and I couldn't see stars so focusing was guess work. I used my Sig 35mm & Pen 15-30. The 35 did a nice job as its a faster lens but not quite wide enough. I kept getting a lot of trailing with using the 15-30 vertically but fine horizontally. I checked the tripod mount several times as I thought it was slipping and the camera was dropping but the mounting plate was tight on the camera and the controls on the tripod were tight, so I'm not sure what the hell was going on. Tried moving it over to my other tripod but could get the mount lever to lock so I gave up for the night. Attached is what the screen looks like on the back of my K-1. I have another K-1 that tends to do the same thing at night, so doing astro is almost pointless.

Which one? I've got a Tether Tools on loan from a rep, but have been so busy at work with other stuff that I haven't been able to test it yet.

Yeah, the Z is FAB. Sorry you had problems with your K1, though....what sorts of issues?

Just disable focus peaking and the snow will disappear.

Just disable SR for long exposures.

No tethering. Pickeded up this unit for timed wireless bulb. It is nice to use and has back-lit screen. They make different cords and of course I ordered the 3.5mm instead of the 2.5mm. Luckily I had an adapter. Search for : JJC Wireless Timer Remote Control for Pentax on eBay.

Tethering could be useful. Looking forward to your review.

Superb photos. Pretty amazing image stabilization system. I like the Fuji count down feature. Little things like that shouldn't be difficult to add to a camera, but they sure add flexibility.

Thanks,

I was going to have one of my cameras converted to IR. But after playing around with my M9 plus R72 filter combo, I find I get exposure times much like using a NDX400 filter (=9 stops) on this unmodified camera. They are typically around 1 second at f11 and ISO 200. While still a long exposure, it's short enough for many pictures plus I don't have to remove the filter to focus/compose. So I think it will be enough to satisfy the occasional urge to do an IR photo without spending more money.

I've heard some Leica digitals have very weak IR filters. If the Pentax were anywhere near that sensitive, I wouldn't have bought the K-01 full spectrum. The 645Z runs about 15 seconds at F11 and ISO 1600. Using the 850IR filter is much worse.

Thanks,
barondla
