I have the same experience with the highlights blown if I shoot at normal exposure, hence mine is also permanently on -1. Except when the light starts to fade away, then I switch back to 0. Hence the first couple of shots in the morning my highlights are usually blown until I remember to switch back to -1.

I like your approach of exposing for the sky and let the darks follow. It does solve a couple of issues, I'll give a try next time.
Digital is like slide film....if you lose the highlights, they can't be recovered.

So, in the field, we underexpose, but in the studio, we can expose to the right on the histogram until it is just below overexposure and then manipulate in PS or other to bring out the shadows and set levels.

Two completely different ways to "expose" our images,

Thanks for posting some of the raw files. I do think it helps us all make decisions about cameras. And, I think we need to say when images are manipulated when posting here.

Paragliding is a very popular sport here in Hong Kong. Some of these guys can hang there in the updraft from the sea for hours.

Unfortunately the uploaded jpegs become very soft especially the details of the paragliders. Hence the crop to show how this lens can bring home the bacon.

The Speed Graphic has a focal plane shutter with faster shutter speeds and perhaps more commonly used by the press photographer back in the day. With a monopod, I can also focus with a loupe on the ground glass pretty quick and then use the viewfinder on top for framing/composition.
Ah, gotcha. I didn't realize about that difference---obviously I had a Speed.

Some re-edits and recovery from the "hold" bin from our trip to Namibia in 2019.

Gosh when I see these pictures I really want to go back there. After we came back from our trip in 2019 we scheduled a follow-up trip for 2020 (flights and hotels paid), then Covid arrived and we had to reschedule for 2021, then Covid stayed longer and we re-scheduled for 2022. Now Omicron arrived and it looks as if we will have to reschedule for 2023.

In the meantime, I can re-edit old discarded raw files.

#1: Moving dunes around Swakopmund. 645z + 80-160mm
#2: Looking down from a balloon ride at Death Vlei at a dry river bed. 645z + 80-160mm. These dry river beds can sometimes contain a lot of sub-surface water.

I missed this one last time I looked in here---really love this image. OOF shots can be pretty trite/gimmicky, but this one is a honey. I've recently liked another couple of yours I've seen as well, but not as much as this one.

"Photography" is in fact the "action of capturing light". The light on your dunes in Namibia is just sort of "extraordinary". Excellent eye you have, Theuns.

Very Best Regards
