Something a bit different this time...
dsmithhfx will also be happy to see that the shots were taken in broad daylight ;-)
The ferry service from Sydney's Circular Quay to Manly is one of the best-known features of Australia. It's a trip of seven nautical miles through the beautiful harbour, including a traverse of the Heads (which often brings with it some 'interesting' conditions). For many years, the trip has been both a daily commute for some and a tourist trip for others. The vessels required for the service have to be big and sturdy enough to handle the conditions, so it's spawned some impressive and much-loved boats.
In 1922, one such vessel, MV Baragoola, was launched and it operated into the 1980s until being replaced by the now-famous Freshwater class vessels (some of which are operating to this day, largely due to public campaigns to save them). Baragoola has a long, complex and sad story since withdrawal from service, with some extremely hard-working attempts being made to restore and look after her, without significant funds. As you can see from these pictures, the project ended up failing. On New Year's Day 2022, just short of her 100th birthday, and without warning, she sank and broke apart in the Harbour. She will now have to be broken up and scrapped. An ignominious end to a long tale.
