Single Rose

I love the depth of field I can get with my 150mm f/2.8 on the 6x7. I feel like it's ability to isolate a subject blows everything else out of the water. I took this at the "Royal Rosarian Rose Garden Contest" in the Lloyd Center a few weeks ago in Portland. Film is Cinestill 800T.

That's the kind of shot the 45 will be good for. Be careful when trying edge to edge sharp focus compositions, with or w/o deep dof.

Really. I'll believe you when I see a 100% crop from the edges---and you may be one of the lucky ones to have a great copy. Let me be clear, the lens isn't a dog. But it is widely understood to be one of the weakest of the 645 primes, and my copy confirmed that---the 45-85 is sharper. Now, it could be that it's a field curvature issues, as is the case with the FA 35---where the A version and the DFA versions are better in that regard (I've had all 3, and still have the DFA).

This is my top candidate for a re-do by Pentax, because it's a dead useful FL.

That has been my experience too. The 67 45mm lens similarly doesn't quite shine for me either.
The long end of the 28-45 is excellent though!

But the 28-45 is a drag to carry around. If you don't need to walk a lot with the lens then it is great. I'd rather hike with the 35 and 45-85 instead of the 28-45.

While what you say is very sensible, it has little impact on what I do. If a good image is to be had, sense goes out the window and straight into my chiropractor's bank account!

While it is true this 45 mm f/2.8 lens does not enjoy a "stellar" reputation, my copy has always given me excellent and very sharp pictures on my 645Z. Maybe it was soft in the corners on a full-frame 645 negative (41X56 mm) but on a smaller digital sensor, its performance is irreprochable. The quality control may have been deficient or people publishing reviews fell on poor copies.

I also have an FA 33-55 mm f/4.5 and an FA 45-85 mm f/4.5 and I'm certain the 3 lenses would give very similar results with my way of using them for landscape pictures (good exterior light, solid support, middle apertures, critical focusing). Another image revealing its resistance to flaring and ghosting :

Best Regards !

Oh! That's a great point---I never think of the 28-45 in terms of the 45 end. So, how do you feel about it compared to the 45-85 at 45? I eagerly await what you have to say about this---and not just sharpness, btw...

The P645 DA & DFA 25mm, P645 DFA & FA 35 mm, P645 DFA 55mm and P67 75mm are all AL lenses and are supposed to have and advantage over other lenses re CA, sharpness, distortion and weight. It doesn't mean non AL lenses are not sharp.

The 28-45 mm is a very sharp lens, although I don't think it is an AL lens.

If I have to buy cold, I would give the advantage to an AL lens. The DFA 55mm has certainly earned its respect in this regard.
