Out on the ice last night with the 50r.
Such sensor with the right light really shines (also thanks to the choice of subject and viewpoint from the photographer )

These are cityscapes of Cincinnati. One was done around blue hour from Devour Park across the river in Kentucky. It's a 5 shot HDR processed in Photomatix 6.3. The second was in Mt. Owens park in Cincy. The light trails up the river are a pleasure boat & cargo barge. Basically a 12 minute exposure (3x4 min)

Just two weeks ago, in mid-December we had deep freeze temperatures, now all traces of ice are gone and temperatures for next week is forecasted for +/- 16C.

During the cold week, we did sneak out to get a winter landscape or two. This picture is of farm lands the morning after we had some ice rain during the night. Wind gusts made the feeling-like temperature even colder and after about an hour I couldn't feel my finger tips anymore. We decided to pack up and go home to a warm fireplace.

#1: the only scene I liked

#2: my wife bracing the cold, just before we decided to call-it-a-day

hanging wit da puppers......after issues the first time using the smc6x7tak 165/2.8 n getting out of focus shots even with focus confirmation (green hex) on the 645z needed to try again...this time some better results but trusted my eye more than the hex.......do any of you manual glass operators experience front focus issues with the hex confirmation? (at least it seems to be front) btw have no issues with AF glass.....thanks

Personally I never rely on the green hex for focus confirmation. I switch on the red square overlay confirmation (with the 645z it is in the "C" menu). But even that can be misleading. I mostly rely on visual confirmation that the image I see is in focus. Takes a bit of practice and you have to be sure that the eye piece diopter is set correctly for your vision. With a fast f/2.8 lens visual focusing is very easy to achieve.

If you do want to rely on the focus confirmation from the camera then you need to dial in the focus adjustment for that lens, just like any other auto focus lens.

For many years I used a split focus focusing screen on my 645z, but earlier this year I went back to the stock focusing screen because it is brighter and is much easier to do visual focussing with.

I hope you find a configuration that works for you, and happy New Year.

I‘d add that optical preview stop down can be very helpfull when focusing manual lenses if not using open aperture and it‘s sufficient bright. I use this technique very often with my M1.7/50 on APS-C and FF.
