I like the beautiful simplicity of a cropped version but the original is more compelling to me and has a nice complexity to it. I'm with Gareth in that If the foreground became parallel to the horizon you might get closer to the aesthetic that drew you to capture it in the way you did. I have a similar photo I worked up recently, that was a bit off, and I duplicated the background layer, did a free transform in photoshop to stretch the sky, and then blended that layer with a simple mask to the original. It worked nicely and was just the nudge that photo needed. Depending on how you view that sort of thing, you might want to give it a try. I would also play with luminosity masks to see what lightening the dark tones in the foreground might do. One other thing I'd try would be to either clone out those light pebbles or sticks, or at least darken them - again with luminosity masks - so my eyes wouldn't linger on the photos edge.
