Hi - thanks for that - I use an Epson perfection scanner - actually quite an old one now - 4990 - and scan the files as TIFFs then use the little bit of headroom that that allows in Lightroom to restore them as best I can to the way they look on a lightbox - mostly the highlight/shadow/white/black sliders, and possibly a tweak on the exposure, contrast, clarity, colour balance and selective sharpening if it helps. These are 6x7s so I don't want to scan enormous files - usually between 300 and 600 dpi, but I do 1200dpi for 35mm trannies - but I think the combination of TIFFs and Lightroom (used because its my normal PP software) is probably the key for me - it obviously helps that the originals in the case above were on Fujichrome Velvia 50, which is very contrasty and punchy anyway. Hope that helps
Fantastic, thanks - so it's just down to my PP technique then! I have Velvia 50 transparencies, an Epson 4870, and Lightroom - so no reason mine shouldn't be too...

So maybe I have just been too optimistic in trying to get shadow detail out of the slide, and should just roll with dark, contrasty shadows. Not my greatest shot(!), but e.g.:

Yuh - like colour negative film, the 'better' (as in closest to the middle range of tones) the exposure the more latitude in printing it - if it's any comfort, you only see the ones of mine that worked ;D - btw - I forgot to mention, I do use Lightroom's graduated filters too if they help - whatever it takes, really - my personal experience is that scans are a bit more contrasty than the originals, but when the original has visible shadow detail, you should be able to get it back again - maybe restoring a bit of contrast in the process - but like with digital originals, so you whisk through LR in seconds, others you tinker with for half an hour - as I say, you only get to see the ones that work

Not bad for a camera that dates back to the Truman administration (the flickr downsampling has softened these a bit).

Rolleiflex 3.5, Portra 400

I would love -- love -- a 645Z but I'll bet no one is going to be using those 65 years from now.

I've been eyeing TLRs, it's amazing the images out can get out of these cameras. Such lovely lenses.
