With my star
trail images, I simply layer them in Photoshop and adjust the layer blending mode to Lighten.
However, for Milky Way shots (which I guess is more relevant to what you want with the comet, because you want to stack to remove noise but leave the main subject apparently well aligned) I have recently started using
Sequator. I have found the results to be very good, and it's free software. The interface isn't the most intuitive, so I recommend viewing a couple of the "how-to" videos on YouTube. Those got me started pretty well. You can stack images and it will align them; you can also tell the software to mask off static areas (foreground details) that you don't want to end up blurred. Works very well.
