Back from Tofino

Well the weather was a lot nicer than forecasted and we had a great time.
I managed to totally screw up my 4x5 shots and salvaged 2 out of 22. I had cleaned the holders that I purchased to remove stickers, dust...and would have swear that they were fully dry. Most of the sheets ended-up wet in the holder and stuck to it That or I loaded the sheet too cold and some form of condensation formed? Add to that some mis handling of the holders that created light leak and uneven development on TMY-2 from a brand new batch of Pyrocat-MC...

Anyway I also had 6x9 with me and these are turning-up quite nice.

The only 4x5 of the trip worth anything:

And it's small brother, not quite there yet

I started developing my 6x9.

Fuji GW690 Acros 100 Pyrocat-MC 1+1+100

Fuji GW690 TMY-2 Pyrocat-MC 1+1+100

Cheers,

Luc

Nice series. I can't say what happen with your film loaders. I've never encountered wet negatives before with my setup. One thing I do when loading 4x5 sheets is use a can of air to blow the film holders and the sheet of film clear of dust while I load them.

I dunno, man, I'd consider giving up on that Pyrocat. How many shots are you going to have uneven development before you realize that you can get the same results from another developer that isn't so susceptible to that problem? What is your agitation profile like?

I have considered buying some PMK.
I am using the agitation schedule from Sandy King.
In retrospect, I should have stuck with Pyrocat-HD instead of buying Pyrocat-MC. I get perfect result with MC for FP4 but for some reason TMY-2 does not seem to like -MC while it was just fine with -HD.

Cheers,

Luc

The data sheet doesn't talk about an agitation profile in a small tank for 120 roll or 4x5 sheet in something like an HP Combi tank that I could find. You can experiment. Try a more vigorous agitation profile, for example. That seems to have solved my uneven development issues with stand and Rodinal.

With PMK, I use the recommended agitation profile of 3 inversions within 5 seconds every 15 seconds.

I'm with tuco here. There's really no reason going on with something that doesn't work. I gave up on low agitation and stand development as soon as I understood that "normal" agitation (every minute) gave far better results with any film I use or have used.
Now I use Tmax developer and agitate twice a minute, with very even and nice results. Maybe I'll show some later (it's 7 pm here).

None the less, nice shots!

Very nice shots! How long did you leave the shutter open?

Here's one from the Tmax roll. I have no idea of how many times you can use the working solution of Tmax developer, but this was the second roll and my guesstimated dev. time @ EI 640 of 8:45 minutes was just perfect. There's still plenty of detail in the shadows if I'd wanted that, but I prefer high contrast. I'll expose for 800 next time.

Edit: Too bad about the reflection of the ugly van.

Turned out well even with the van. Really has some nice texture.

A liter of working T-Max developer is good for about 12 rolls. And, if not replenished with T-Max RS, it needs time compensation. That is, after X-number of rolls, you need to increase the development time. And after Y-number of rolls, increase it some more.

Now when you are at roll number 10 or 11, you'll have some of your best shots and you may ponder if you should risk using near exhausted developer because you want them to be their best and possibly mix a new batch.

Thanks Tuco, Matken for the advice.
The doorway looks pretty good and I actually like the reflection of the van. Well an old Jag would be of course nicer...

I have been developing in Pyrocat HD
  • 1+1+100 75F 16' agitation every 3'
as per Sandy King recommendations for TMY-2 on APUG/LFF. This worked for HD but does not seem to work for MC.

I am now trying different development for MC:
  • 1+1+100 70F 15' agitation 10" every minute
The negatives are washing as we speak.
Crossing my fingers it solves the problem.

I am trying to use only one developer that does all my films and when Pyrocat works, I like the results.

Cheers,

Luc

Rense, I love the colors in the last shot! There's really nothing like slide film. Fore some reason I also like the "flat" blackpoint, which you could have pulled one stop or so.
I think I'll have to try some E-6 development at home after I'm done with the C-41.

----------------

I must say that Tmax 400 in Tmax dev is the best combination for B&W film I've tried so far. I can get exactly the results I want without much PP at all!

The files come out so sharp after scanning that I'll have to tweak my downscaling scripts, because now there's just too much detail for the screen to handle at 1024 pixels width.
