I must say that Tmax 400 in Tmax dev is the best combination for B&W film I've tried so far. I can get exactly the results I want without much PP at all!

Hello Martin,

I have got some liquid TMax Developer based on your comments.
The time I have found and will try are as follows:
  • TMY-2 @ 400 Dilution 1+9 24oC 13-3/4 minutes
  • TMX @ 100 Dilution 1+9 24oC 13-1/2 minutes
Do you have any suggestions based on your experience using TMax developer?

Thanks.

I used the suggested 1+4 dilution for 6:30 @ 21ºC for the first roll (IE 400) and the same working solution for 8:45 @ 21ºC for the second roll (IE 640). The solution will be more and more exhausted, so I'll have to prolong the dev time for next time.

Also, just to be clear, there is T-Max developer and T-Max RS developer. The latter you'd use on your sheet film.

More Portra... The colors are really f*cked up and I don't know why. Kind of like it anyway.

It's a bit of a challenge to shoot handheld and still get deep DOF. The first one is at f/8 and the second at f/22 with the 55/4.

Any suggestions for a simple metering device? My P67II must from now on be used with the electrical contacts for the metering prism taped, because of some error, as you might know from the other thread. It won't stop me though.

Nice shots, Gary. I passed by your town along I-5 on the way back from Florence where I was getting some shots. I saw some great photo opportunities in the fields around your area on the way home. Tractors working the fields were kicking up dust near sunset and working in sets of three.

So Tmax developer is not one-shot? That would be nice I have a few rolls of 120 TMY-2 from the trip.

Cheers,

You've read the T-Max developer data sheet? It is a time compensating developer. After X-number of rolls, you need to increase the developing time and still further after Y-number of rolls on the mix. I suppose if you mixed it in really small working solution volumes, it could be used as one-shot.

Right - thanks. I am staying with Ilford for 4x5. I have a stock of FP4 (dwindling fast now), Delta 100 and HP5. So far I like what I get from FP4 and HP5 and the price is better than TMY-2.
So the Tmax developer is going to be only for 120 rolls - provided I can make it work and get nice results.

Cheers,

Luc

No I just got the developer in the mail while I was away. I actually found one of your very own post on Flickr that gives the time compensation for 1 liter of working solution - perfect.
I am assuming that this still hold true to various dilution i.e. 1-4, 1-7 or 1-9?

Cheers,

Luc

I had to google that!

Regarding Tmax developer, I also thought it was "one shot" and therefore very expensive. But as Tuco says, you can use it a few times with extended time for ever new roll you develop. The bottle sticker says that 1 liter of working solution should be good for 12 rolls, and I'm using 0.4 liters for my small stainless steel tank. So I'll run 5 rolls through it before scrapping.

Edit: I suppose that when the working solution is getting more exhausted, it resembles a more diluted solution. If that's the case, the results will probably change a little bit with the use of the developer over time. More diluted developer often gives more of a compensating effect (stand development is this, taken to extremes).

As always nice images on this thread.
@Makten, really like the colors in the bike foto.

This one was taken 13 years ago but developed just last week, as I return to processing my own film for the first time in over a decade.
Taken with a Mamiya C33 + kit lens, TMX 400 and developed with Rodinal.

Great character shot. Welcome back to rolling your own. Did Mamiya offer any lenses for that camera in an economical version of a better one to even call it a "kit lens"?
