Hi,

So I still have my friends Yashica D on loan and one day I tested my cactus V4 triggers with it. Surprisingly it worked very nicely! All the pictures came out ok. This was shot on Velvia 100, which is propably not the best option for this kind of shot, but I think it looks ok. I did adjust some contrast and levels in Lightroom though.

This Yashica TLR has been extremely fun camera to play with, I´ll have to get one at some point..

I got even more funny looks when I stood at the pedestrian refuge taking photos of the tramlines and the trams. Every other person was asking whether I was a photographer for the local paper

I converted this to Black and white in Silver efex

That black and white street car shot is great. At first glance it doesn't look like a long exposure image.

The Epson uses it´s second and better lens at 6400 dpi, I think? Please advise me if you are experienced tuco — regards Jakob

The higher resolution optical path is determined by the presence of the film holder and is not dependent on the chosen resolution.

Tuco is correct. The native resolution of your scanner is about 2400 dpi, though I can dependably expect that one or more forum users will chime in that with judicious sharpening, you can get the appearance of somewhat higher resolution. There are several threads in the film processing/scanning section on this site where the the V700/V750 performance is discussed in depth. I usually sum it up with a single comparison image between my V700 and Nikon 5000 ED from a 35mm negative...

They sell Epson scanners as well as Canon, Nikon (while stock holds out), Imacon (Hasselblad), Plustek, and others. I have found their reviews to be pretty balanced and accurate.

As for best results from your medium format negatives, a solid 2400 dpi is pretty good in my way of thinking. If you need 4000 dpi, a Nikon 9000 ED will deliver (assuming you can find one and can afford the $$$). Beyond that are the Hasselblad products (Imacon)...$$$$$ or paying for drum scans.

If you want to maximize performance from your Epson, I would suggest the adjustable height film holders from betterscanning.com. They also support wet mount if you want to go "all the way".


BTW...Here is a scan from my V700 from a 6x7 negative (non-Pentax...taken with my Chamonix...)




And another taken with a borrowed 645N




These low resolution (600 dpi IIRC) scans are pretty decent and the same negatives at 2400 are quite impressive. I am quite happy with my Epson!

Now I don't mean to be difficult, but it could be useful to do some of your own tests. Like scanning at 6400dpi then comparing to a scan at 2400dpi upscaled to 6400dpi (using a good algorithm). My own tests when I first bought my V700 weren't very scientific, but I doubt there will be much difference in real information recorded by the 6400dpi scan. It will just be... bigger.

OK, I have tested a 6400 dpi scan Vs. a 2400 dpi scan. I scaled up the 2400 dpi scan using all the available interpolation algorithms in Photoshop CS5.
Iam looking for detail (for BIG prints) but also color depth, tonality, contrast etc. — image quality areas where the 6X7 excels compared to a DSLR:

Just the answer I'd expect too. If you could get true 6400dpi scan on medium format from a $750 scanner, people would sell their $20,000 scanners and use it. The Hasselbad X5 only does 3200dpi for medium format.

It's a similar situation to cellphone cameras and a fairly old DSLR. You can get a Sony ericsson phone with a 12 mp camera. A Canon 300D will still beat it hands down, even though it's numbers are 50% lower. As we know it's not all about resolution but also quality. If we could get better shots from the cellphone what are we doing walking around with huge cameras for? Quality is the reason.

Yeah, IQ etc. is a very good reason to carry 6-8 kg. to town or field and this is why I am dedicated to not wasting that effort in the scanning process. I might end up scanning my photos for exhibition use on the Imacon that I have access to (..rent by the hour for what equals 8 bucks) but not until I have tested the Epson. How does a 47X59 inches print from an Epson high res scan look? How does it compare with wet print, say around 20X24 inches (..I would not have the money to have someone produce it any larger anyway)?

Hi Steve, The Betterscanning plate with glass properly adjusted is great addition to my V700. The negitive must be flat. But my Nikon 9000 is still best.

The Milky Way from Scutum to Cepheus. I had longed dreamed of puting together such a mosaic. It was one long night in September, and on a work night no less! The first exposure started at 9:17 PM and the last exposure ended at 1:28 AM, the next morning. A equatorial mount allowed the camera to compensate for the Earth's rotation. The vertical length covers approximately 90 degrees, from near the horizon to overhead beyond the zenith.

A mosaic of 4 panels, each a 60 minute exposure using a Pentax 67 with 105mm f/2.4 lens at f/4.8, Fujicolor Superia 100. Due to unmanageable color gradiants I decided to convert to b&w to make it publishable.

The original could make a finely dtailed poster as tall as an interior wall, say 24" x 96"
