I used the Sun Surveyor App on my phone to line up the camera and find the Celestial Pole since it was too bright out to see the North Star when I set up. It's an app for photographers too. It has an azimuth/altitude spherical overlay in the phone's camera for a live view. It came in handy.
Not to sound fawning, Tuco, but you really do epitomize the great attributes of a photographer. I see this star trails image, and I remember your terrific images from the bike-mounted 6x7, and I'm reminded of how fun and creativity-spurring photography was to me when I was a kid. The difference between you and the rest of us, though, is that you've retained that spirit through the years, and you've really embellished it with your skill.
