Under high magnification, how do the negatives look. I mean, can you see it on the negative? It almost looks like blotchy stains on the scanner glass or something. But I can't say I never seen that effect before.

It looks streaky on the whole negative, not just the exposed parts. And textured. It almost looks like the plastic or whatever has aged or degraded. It doesn't look like there is still silver on there, though it's hard to be sure. It's like some parts are more opaque than others.

Looking at some 35mm HP5 which I used with the same batch of fixer and they look fine.

Good morning Jez,
Sorry to hear of the disappointing results off your old/expired films.

I've looked at your image, and based on my assumption that its a frame scanned from a 120 roll film - I'm recognising the blotchy problems as 'wrapper mottle/interaction'. ie unfortunately the mottled/textured inside of the wrapper - has transposed onto your films images.

'Wrapper mottle/interaction', is an effect we've only ever known occasionally arise with very old films (ie only ever on films that have exceeded their advised expiry dates). So your film - having expired in 2005 - definitely fits this criteria.
Its typically not just age alone though that causes it to happen - its typically also triggered by one or all of the following :-
- storage conditions (if films are not stored cool/dry - that can trigger the mottle effect to arise).
- if a film is exposed, but not processed until several years later.
- if a film is fridge/freezer stored - but has not been given adequate time to totally defrost (ie typically we would advise defrosting for 24 hours - before using a film).

That you've encountered this film as being affected, its likely that others in your freezer off the exact same batch/age will also be affected - unless its the above mentioned additional trigger of insufficient de-frosting thats caused it to arise.

My advice would be that if you do have other films of this exact same batch (the batch number is on the film carton rear side - a number such as 26CHR1C/01-2), you don't risk using them for real shoots - especially if its a shoot that can't be repeated).
Or if you did wish to try risk using them, test one film out - where you've given it at least 24 hours to de-frost (if the damaged one was not given that sort of defrost time). Then, depending on those findings, you may then wish to use them for certain shoots.

Your findings are a shame - as certainly we hear of many people who do get alot of success with films at similar old ages to yours. With very old films, typically the only issues that arise are ones you'll also know and appreciate - such as the films will have lost some speed/contrast/Dmax, and will have started to gain fog.

I hope that helps clarify the cause for you, and that maybe you'll have some way to rescue the images, or can repeat shoot them.
(Unfortnately there isn't any alternate method to process, or that you can do different when processing - to what you do, that would eradicate the problem or lessen its severity).

Thanks. I took a similar shot with the D800E, but I didn't like the tones on it in BW. The contrast wasn't subtle enough. I love both cameras, but for me the 645D has the edge on tone. Looking forward to what the Mk II might offer.

Hi, developed and print at Dwayne's Photo, KS. They do mail order.
To be honest, their prints and develop are good, but their scan is... less than ideal (not a problem if you do your own scan).
also, they are very accommodate to your request.

Good scan lab I have seen (did not try them myself, yet) include, CS film lab, indie film lab, and a pretty new one, little film lab. But from what I know, not all of them offer prints, and if they do, they don't print from negatives, they print from digital scan (which is good too because their scan is so nice).

Compared to the 6x7, even the 645D is a "Cropped Sensor."

May I ask what size the prints are? 4x5? They look great! I agree with buy 120 film philosophy and the Portra 400. I love that stuff.

it is suppose to be 4x5 standard, they cut off the extra white space (but fit the whole 6x7 image in). The colors are nice compare to their scan...
I will keep getting prints for my 120 since they did a good job.
