I always shoot raw. I use DNG and pulled detail from shadows in LR 5.
Ok , so how much pull? are you getting a sense of the latitude at either the highlight or shadow ends of things?

Why hmmm?

Nik's filters are great and as long as you don't go overboard (which everyone does when they start with it and then adjust their behaviour afterwards if they have sense). It's all about believability. I like my images to be believable. Note I don't say real. My aim isn't necessarily to show exactly what I see, but what I want the image to say. Development has always played a part, just now it's digital. I try hard not to over process them. It is said that camera don't lie - they are incapable of showing you the truth, so it isn't a lie. We see in 3D cameras in 2D. 3D cameras don't show real 3D just a simulation of it. Neither does any camera have equal dynamic range to us. So we have to interpret what we see into what we want to show.

As far as latitude is concerned, bucket loads. How many bucket loads depend on your print size or viewing distance. You can easily pull back 3 stops from shadows without harming EQ very much if at all. You can pull even more back pretty easily, especially if you're not obsessed with pixel peeping (which I'm not). There is a school of thought of exposing to the right, but since highlights are always more difficult to pull back, I tend to slightly underexpose if it is high contrast. I know I can always pull it out as I know the detail is there.

Terrific shots Itshimitis! Enough to inspire a strong case of 645Z envy. (& agree strongly about Nik filters)

This is not an argument about aesthetics, or the legitimacy of PP or filters, but the particular context of these images right now, days after the first of these machines has hit the street, and how much PP they've had. In this particular context, for the rest of us, less is more (in terms of our own evaluations of IQ). Questions about the appropriateness of PP decisions long term, for final products, is another discussion for another day.

Great to hear, and that second bit is the wise thinking these days, ETTR-but!...

.
With respect this thread is not about technical qualities of the camera but is precisely about the aesthetic qualities - it is a gallery thread for people to share their images. So you won't see me or most others posting unprocessed images. I'm happy to answer questions, but I won't be posting unfinished images here...

itshimitis, love your shots! Hope you don't take this the wrong way, but do you need to post each shot in colour and mono? I think I'd prefer it if you chose the one you felt best suited the scene? No offence meant!

Some from 645z today in London. Some cropping and minimal post. Plus a 100% crop of a surprising detail...
55mm, 80-160mm & 25mm lenses.

---------- Post added 07-07-14 at 08:14 PM ----------

Oh yes, for LL reference, no tripod used above...

Do you have anything constructive to add or did you just get out of the he bed the wrong side this morning?

I think these shots are very fine indeed, but quite apart from that, Itshimitis and others are doing the rest of us a favor by showing us pictures they have taken with a piece of brand new equipment--sometimes within hours of receiving it--as they're getting the hang of it! I know I'm not alone in being extremely eager to see what other Pentaxians can do with the 645 Z (even though, alas, I doubt that I'll be able to afford one myself).

So please carry on Itshimitis!
