So I'm new to medium format and would appreciate some feedback. Here are two images I took with my recently-acquired Pentax 6x7 and 105 f2.4, using Kodak Porta 400 film. I used Northwest Photographic to develop he film and send back hi-res scans as I don't yet have developing capability or a scanner. I did a bit of work in LR as I underexposed a little, so that was my first lesson (relied on the camera's light meter but have since bought a spot meter). These photos definitely are more grainy than the photos I took with a 645, but I was using Porta 160 with the 645. Does the different ISO explain the increased grain? Other than working on exposure, what else would you advise? Mostly interested in landscapes and occasional portraits of my wife, so maybe a different film? Would slides be a better option?
Thanks

Thanks for the response tuco. I'll play with some different films and see how it goes. Since I'm not developing myself, I'm hesitant to try overexposing/under developing, but I can always ask the lab if they'll do special instructions.

I'd say that this was because they are underexposed. For negative film, err on the side of overexposure I'd say.

Thanks tuco and rob1234. I'll use the spot meter next roll as a check on the camera's meter so hopefully exposure will be better. Thanks for the feedback.

What 67 are you shooting. I shoot the 67ii and have found the meter quite Accurate and the build in spot meter quite good too.
I seem to recall the metering prism for the older 67 bodies not being quite as accurate.

Old film advise on negative film was to expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights, because of the nonlinear response curve of film.

Btw, i think most pro labs will do push/pull processing, I know the one I use in Copenhagen offer it at least.

Yes. And more doable with sheet film than with roll film because you can't apply different development times to the same roll of film. However, with 120 roll film it's not too bad. You only have 10 frames with a 6x7 and pretty easy to shoot all the shots for the same processing. And in the case of something like a Hasselblad with its hot-swapping backs you can devote rolls to normal, compression and expansion development and just swap backs when the scene calls for it.
All true

The one downside to the 67 system is the lack of ability to hot swap film.

Mine is the 6x7 (Pre-67) MLU version. It's old so not totally surprised by a few glitches. Here's my latest: first roll didn't use a cable release. Just loaded the 2nd roll and tried a shot with a new cable release and the camera locked up. Did a forums search and sounded like removing the battery might release (BTW, shutter open and mirror up right now), but that didn't help. I detached the cable release and it's stuck in the depressed position. Given I'd set the shutter to 1/60th, would a faulty cable release stuck down cause the camera lock-up? I checked the locking mechanism on the release and it's definitely not locked. Porbably wrong thread for this question, but since I'm here...
