Rob, I'm not rich. I traded a bunch of gear in to get the price down, and am using all used lenses. But there are some other ways to look at this: we all prioritize our spending. For instance, I see you live in London, one of the world's most expensive cities. I live in a cheap city and in a cheap neighborhood. My vehicle is a 2003 truck I bought used, do some of the work on myself and drive infrequently, and my wife's is a very economical car. We don't do a lot of things others do, and when we travel we go cheap (which is better and more interesting, imo). I know people who have very expensive hobbies, like fishing from boats. & etc. Expensive lifestyles. We feel the outsider-ness of our existence sometimes, but I remind myself of our priorities. So I prioritized my spending and wound up with this (surprise) purchase. It was partly serendipitous, but I also feel like I have moved to the top of the upgrade path, and shedding all that gear (3 bodies, 8 lenses, plus accessories...) really cleared my head. In a very real way this expenditure may wind up being cheaper for me than thrashing around the way I have been with gear. I feel like it has helped clarify a lot of things, including where I am going in the next few years with photography (only part of my work as an artist). So, that's my story, for what it's worth.

I relate this because I've seen more than a few comments on the price of this camera being out of reach, but it's really not, if it's what you need, compared to ramping up in other systems. And we should remember what many FF cameras used to cost just a few short years ago---pretty much close to the Z.

Too true texandrews. I don't expect to ever have a digital 645 (but I love my film one) but if I calculated all I've spent on film and digital gear in the last five years I could get a full frame DSLR and a couple of good primes. I'd have much less gear but it might end up being better for me...

I only shoot film and 90% of that is slide film. (Colour & b+w)

The “look” you can get with slide film is unique and can’t be created in digital.

Save your money and enjoy what you have. I have ZERO interest in any Pentax 645 digital body and will happily continue to use my Pentax 35mm & 6x7 film bodies. I only dream of Kodachrome coming back and not owning a 645Z.

Yes, so true. I can afford a 645D even when it was new at the time. And the Z certainly looks more like with what I want in a digital camera. But to date I haven't got one. Odd since I like shooting medium format so much and have been for 25 years. Even if I had a Z or D I'd still be shooting my BW film both in medium and large format film just because I enjoy the experience. So that's the rub for me. Spending so much money on a MFD camera + lenses ( definitely would want the 25mm) means I'd have to shoot it all the time to justify the cost since I don't earn a living from my cameras. A digital 35mm camera with its super fast focus for action and 3D tracking ability fills my modest needs at the moment. What I really wish for is a digital back for my 500C/M at 1/2 the price of a Z.

I own a D645 and I have test it with the standard 55mm against the Sony A7R with Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8, my findings is the Sony combination is far sharper than the D645 file. This lead to the question of lens quality over the size of sensor (both in MP and physical size), would like to hear thoughts from 645Z owners on this.

I own a D645 and I have test it with the standard 55mm against the Sony A7R with Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8, my findings is the Sony combination is far sharper than the D645 file. This lead to the question of lens quality over the size of sensor (both in MP and physical size), would like to hear thoughts from 645Z owners on this.

That is interesting to hear. I have the A7R and the Z, now, and so will be doing some comparisons shortly (hopefully this coming week)---I haven't been able to do much of anything with the Z yet as my eldest daughter's wedding was last Sunday, so house guests, all that wedding stuff, & etc---plus both my wife and I are on deadlines with respective projects. Too much to do! A strange summer this year.

Of course that Zeiss lens is reputed to be stellar, so that could indeed be a difference, but also that Sony sensor is new and pretty darn good. I don't have that lens, but I do have both the Contax G 45 f2 and 90 f2.8, so I can see how they look against the 75 and the 120 macro and 150 on the Z, and I have the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, which is a fine zoom and works well on my A7R, and I can test it against the 45-85 on the Z (don't have the 80-160 yet...).

The bridge shots are very interesting to me---the second is the showy one but the first is subtly excellent. What were the iso's used, out of curiosity and if you are willing to say, and what was the speed of the night shot?

I'm away from my computer at the moment so can't give the ISOs for sure. None are above 400. The night one was ISO was 100 and the exposure time 6 minutes

very nice Ed! I don't believe i have seen a similar comp of Sydney Harbor before. The silhouette of the Opera house in backlight is stunning
