A few days ago we copped a pretty severe electrical storm here in Port Macquarie. I went down to the hastings river to watch this fast moving front pass above. I watched a wall of wind push up the river towards me which created 1-2 ft waves. My Tripod is a heavy medium format carrying set of legs with a bit of weight to stabilize the bulk of the Pentax 645Z. The wind lifted my camera set up on to two legs as the first gusts hit. I literally shot about 7 images before a giant lightning bolt flew down incredibly close to me. My ears rang and I got an instant headache from the sound of this strike. The first time I have felt seriously uncomfortable whilst shooting a storm. I threw my gear in the van and got out of there. It was a very unnerving experience but a totally beautiful and surreal one at that.

Brilliant image!....love the rain streaks .....my friend nearly got hit by lightning too when carrying a carbon fibre fishing rod......he was heading for the car when it happened....Stay safe!

Great shot! I know that feeling: "Run away! Run Away!"

I've shot electrical storms from inside my car with the window open before because I was afraid of getting struck. In theory, being in a car will protect you.

Yeah I have heard a car is safe, I assume the rubber tyres would prevent a strike to earth out! I might have to wear thick rubber boots next time! Thanks

No it's the metal around you that conducts the strike closer to the ground without having to go through you. If it's already jumping across the air, tires or boots will not slow it down. Don't think rubber boots are any kind of protection!

Yes, the reason you are safer in a car is that it acts as a Faraday cage; the current flows most efficiently through the metal structure rather than through objects (like you) that are within the cage and less efficient conductors. If you do not touch any metal or the outside surfaces of the car, you stand a better chance of surviving. It has nothing to do with the tyres insulating; if the current can jump thousands of feet through the air, it can jump the distance of a tyre to the ground. You just have to offer the current a better route to earth than through you, and surround yourself with that route, without touching it. Holding a camera or tripod within a car and near a window, or propped on the car, is thus ill-advised too!

Of course falling trees onto the car can still get you ;-)

There is also advice on how to minimise risk if you are caught outside and away from a car. It mostly consists of staying away from trees (and similar things), crouching or hunkering low to the ground, standing away from other people and keeping your legs together (not having legs apart, as each of them then offers a separate route to the ground). Not holding a tripod or an umbrella is also advised!

Very nice lightning shot Thomas. I can tell you from 23 years of lightning shooting with 6x7 that it is a dangerous business. Just when you think you have it figured out, you get blasted by a close bolt that was totally unpredictable. This has happened to me twice over the years and now I shoot with longer glass than in my early years.

I've had a couple of offers from galleries here in Houston. But I've done them before and so far they seem to be more of a pain than the last one I did. I love doing exhibits, but the galleries do them to make money and sometimes that gets in the way of an enjoyable experience.
