To me, a photograph like this epitomizes what a great photographer can do.

There are photographs that are great because the subject matter is great and there are photographs that are great because the photographer is great. This image belongs to the latter category!

Most people who have walked by this rock outcrop never gave it a second glance. Probably, no one has ever photographed it before (the exception might be a snapshot of a rambunctious child standing atop the rock or a beloved dog sniffing at the base). It's not the classical dramatic scene of deep valleys, massive mountains, majestic trees, bright fields of wildflowers, or impressive animals that dominated so much of landscape photography. It's just an ordinary rock in a plain field of grass, in front of the some every-day trees.

Yet the image works and works extremely well on so many levels. The elements of this image that I like are:
* the perfect distances between the frame edge and objects;
* the slightly OOF background;
* the bias of the rock to the right of the frame with the sweep of the grass to the left;
* the dark-bright-dark-bright alternation of layers in the scene;
* the bent-linear gap in the branches in the center that seems to lead to the flower-like bright patch of the sun;
* the juxtaposition of sepia-brown cloud and spring-green grass; and
* the parallel angles of the weed stalks with the foreground rock surfaces the 50-50 split of ground & sky.

Excellent work!

wow, thanks so much! You've noticed more than I did, as it was a brief moment of sun breaking through the grey overcast. The backlight was a sudden surprise and my eye went first to the lit knife edge of the pointed rock which I wanted to highlight. In moments, it had ended and was back to flat light again.

My 67 and 165/2.8 are long sold but I did like that lens. This from 2008, neighbor kid, now grown and in Australia. It was color negative film, had it processed and I scanned it on an Epson v500 which I still use. You're inspiring me to get my 645N back in use.

Pentax 645z, vertical 5-stitch pano. I have just decided do redo this one with less dfo and a little wider (the print really shows all the details and traces of all its inhabitants.

This was one of the last pictures my old Fuji GSW690III took before the shutter broke last fall. But I liked the camera enough to get another one which arrived today. One thing about switching between cameras that look through the lens and rangefinders is you gotta remember the rangefinder quirks. In this shot it's the view finder's frame lines are not accurate up close ( clipped hands and feet)

Yeah! The lawn literally mows itself, grinding rock to tiny fragments of sand and everything! 8-)

Here's some more from the Pentax 645Z + FA 35/3.5:

Rather simple. But fun and a nice test object for the 645z's autofocus
