Great work ivanvernon!
Thank you. I love the detail the 645D-90mm is capable of picking up.

Arsat 30mm fisheye on the 645D

Few test shots on 645D with P6 mount Arsat 30mm f 3.5. No scenery around here to really justify this lens, but one of these days I am packing up and heading to Colorado.

Impressive depth of field. I'll have to get one of those Arsats some day.

I'm already prepared with a spousal specialist in horizontal surface occupation. I strive mightily to compete in her league, but there is no contest.

Jocelyn does not like me to take photos inside the house because someone may think she is not a tidy housekeeper, and that is the only time the untidiness bothers her! I don't complain.

I think the Arsat 30 is one of the best medium format bargains around. I see the Hasselblad 30mm fisheye listed on eBay for between $1,500 and $3,500, and some reviewers have suggested that the Arsat is about 90 percent as good as the Hasselblad. I think the Hassy and the Arsat both have Carl Zeiss origins but I do not know the optical formulae or other similarities/differences between the two lenses.

With modern computer-aided optics design programs, it is relatively straightforward for one skilled in the art (not me but several people I've worked with in the past) to generate a lens design that has the properties one wants. The difficulty comes in successfully tolerancing such a design (or any of several candidate designs) so that economical mass production can be performed. Economical mass production means straightforward assembly of within-tolerance components without complex adjustments while retaining the desired optical properties.

I remain amazed that prices for new camera lens assemblies, no matter how far their prices may be from affordability for me, are as low as they are. The 645 FA 35 mm, for example, apparently lists in the $1600 region, and looks like this with 10 elements, with many surfaces AR coated. And please note that while a set of identical lenses can be AR coated together, each different index material lens has to have its own tailored (bespoke) coating formula.

Snap!
I've never really tried seeing how close I can focus with this camera until now. X-post.

As I recall, the Arsat isn’t a Zeiss ripoff, but good fisheye designs are part of the Russian optical DNA, it would seem. If one gets a good one, the Arsat is every bit as good as the Distagon. But it was subject to the usual second-world QC, so one might have to be willing to try several. I myself own two. And a third one was delivered with a reversed or missing inner element.

The flat rear filter is also part of the optical design and must be kept in place.

I had the Distacon for a little while and the Arsat sure has a similar look. They definitely copied the hood and front element. My Zeiss was bad so I can't make a good comparison but the Arsats see to punch way above their weight. I like to de-fish mine a little in post.

Cold wet rocks.

Very nice composition, in my view. Printed large and hung on a wall, it could keep one's attention for quite a while.

60 oh's and ah's incorporated herein by reference. Also multiple kudosi for captioning.

With respect to the photo of Mr. 645Z and friends: Did you use a big box type diffuser to bring out the textures of black on black while keeping down specular highlights?
